It’s Official: Hubby has a Hobby

It is official.  Hubby really does have a hobby….that makes me so happy.  For years and years..no hobbies at.  It actually really worried me.  I have SO MANY hobbies and he had none.  I was actually worried what retirement might look like for us.  I could see him just hating it.

Want to see???  (Of course I didn’t take a before picture) but Hubby refinished this antique file cabinet.

FileCabinet-1
I am so impressed.  We had bought it last summer.  It was painted dark, dark green…so green it was almost black.

Here are a couple of the boards from when it was in progress.

FileCabinet-4
Can you believe all that nasty paint removed to create this??

FileCabinet-2
When he initially said he wanted to that…I was skeptical.  He’s handy and all but detailed work is not his specialty.  But, he impressed me!!

FileCabinet-3
Now I need to do a little furniture shuffling so I can find a good home for it next to my roll top desk. (You can read about the desk here.)

As much as I like the file cabinet and can’t wait to use it, I am even more happy that hubby has a hobby.

Today I am hooking up with Vintage Thingy Thursday with the Colorado Lady.

  1. Congratulations to Hubby on a job well done! That is a beautiful file cabinet Jo!! My Mom loves to refinish furniture also and I’ve ended up with some beautiful pieces of furniture thanks to her :o)

  2. That is absolutely beautiful. Talk about an ugly duckling turning into a swan! I love old furniture, it has some substance.

  3. Love the cabinet and what a makeover. I’m glad hubby now has a hobby. I have the same concern here. We are still working on that. Your cabinet will look great next to your desk.

  4. Beautiful! I understand Hubby needing a hobby…….I have been trying for years to help my Hubby find something he’s crazy about like I am but so far no luck. You are lucky to have that one behind you. Hubby did a good job!

  5. Beautiful cabinet!
I think some men have to get to a certain age or time in their life. My husband’s was in the past year or so. All the kids are grown and his work is not as physically draining as it was in earlier years. He has a bit more energy and money to devote to a hobby.

  7. Your filing cabinet turned out great!! Maybe your hubby can do that as a side business in retirement. You know, keep him out from underfoot and bring in a little cash at the same time. My DH will be retired as of Mar. 11. He’ll have his garden, his fruit trees, lawn mowing and fishing to keep him busy during the good weather months. However when the next winter comes around we will see how it goes. He really doesn’t have any inside hobbies so I suspect he will try to micro-manage me….and that just isn’t going to work at all.

  8. I am glad that your husband has a hobby. I have been discussing the same thing with my husband lately. He is planning to retire next year and he has no hobbies. I am trying to get him to take a photography class as he takes great pictures but I think the class would help him take even better ones. The truth is I am like you and have lots of hobbies and am kind of afraid that if he doesn’t have one it will mean less time for mine after he retires. Don’t get me wrong I have no problem with him retiring and us spending more time together I just don’t want him to be bored because I never am bored. Hmmm…. maybe I could get him to take up quilting that might mean a longarm quilting machine in my future!!!

  9. The file cabinet looks like it’s back in it’s original condition! Why would anyone have painted over that beautiful oak? Your husband did a great refinishing job!

  10. That looks F.A.B. and what a useful hobby! We have hardly ever bought new furniture and my Hubs really likes the challenge of making some tatty-looking piece (of furniture, that is) look good. Is this the “Quilters Husband’s Official Hobby”?

  11. Great hobby–and he is sooo good at it! But where will you put all the furniture?! I am trying desperately to get my husband to take up knitting as I am DYING for hand-knit socks!!!!! There is no way that I have time for it, but he could….
