Meet Star Spangled Sky our newest Moda Bake Shop project!
The gals over at Fat Quarter Shop have all the fabric you need to make the quilts.  You can find it here.  The gals are so generous and are giving away a jelly roll of the line to one of our readers…just keep reading and we’ll let you know how to sign up to win.
Kelli and I originally wanted to make the quilts from Minick and Simpson’s line Indigo Crossings but when we contacted Moda’s Sample room we were told we would need to pick a different fabric line as they didn’t have what we needed. Â We debated for a bit and reluctantly picked Paint Box Batiks. Â Kelli and I have never sewn with batiks and were a little hesitant. Â We ended up loving the experience!!
We did another new thing with this quilt too. Â We used a white from a different fabric line. Â It’s actually from PB&J. Â It’s called Creamy Grunge..Fat Quarter Shop has it here. Â The fabrics mixed very nicely.
When it came time to quilt it, I was again at a loss. Â Keep in mind this isn’t perfect and I am still learning but this is what I did in the white open borders.
I admit..I really wanted to do feathers but I just wasn’t brave enough..someday soon I will be. Â These stars ended up being okay. Â In the borders on the red I did a swirl.
The center of the quilt was done in a wood grain. Â It’s a design I learned from the Pajama Quilter. Â Sorry..the thread blends so much that you can’t see.
The stars were done with something that just popped into my head. Â I need more practice but for a first time..it’s okay.
I used a variegated thread that ranged from white to baby blue to navy blue. Â It was was a good choice. Â All in all we are really happy with how it turned out.
The pattern is free here at Moda Bake Shop.
The quilt finishes at 90″ x 90″.
If you would like a chance to win a jelly roll, just leave a comment here telling if you have made a project with batik fabric. Â We’ll pick a winner next week.
We are really close to having 1200 Facebook followers…we’d love it if you would help us reach that milestone. Â Here’s the link if you are inclined.
I made a challenge project for guild using batiks and love the way it turned out, too! The variations in the colorings through the fabric make it so unique!
Love your project, too! Stars are my favorite blocks to make, so this one has gone on the to do list!
I have only ever made one quilt using batiks. It was for one of my nieces. I would like to make another one some time.
I love batiks! I’ve been making things with them for YEARS! They are lovely to sew and are also wonderful in needleturn applique. A jellyroll would be wonderful!
I made a double french braid quilt from batiks for my foyer. It is 110″ long and is done in a greens, blue greens and golds. It really makes me smile every time I see it. Thanks for offering this giveaway.
Love working with batiks! They play well with regular cottons too. Thanks for the awesome giveaway.
I haven’t had the chance the use batiks yet…Thanks for the great giveaway! vickise at gmail dot com
I have not used batiks. Your quilt is beautiful.
Oh yes, I love batiks. And I love stars. So (shockingly) most of my batik quilts were star quilts. Yahoo.
Thanks, as always, for the chance to win.
I have a jelly roll of batiks that I’ve got on my long to do list.
I love batiks—I love the shading that batiks have–I want to learn to do more landscape quilts and they are so awesome for it…thanks for the chance to win….
Funny, but I just created a block using a batik charm pack I picked up. I don’t usually like them but this really came out cute. Thanks for the chance to win. I LOVE the way your quilt came out and the fabrics is lovely!
I’ve done a small Hawaiian-style wall hanging using a batik for one part of a Keri Duke design, and using a hand-dyed fabric for the rest of the design. It turned out very nice and easy to work with. I love the feel of batiks!
Jo, you are too hard on yourself your quilting is awesome. Wish I was brave to do all the designs you try. The quilt is awesome, thanks for all you do for the quilting world!
I have never used batiks before! And after 30 years of quilting, I
think it is time! Thanks!
I love working with batiks and I’m glad to used them for this great quilt. I find batiks fray less when handles and they seem to make a crisper looking quilt.
I have a quilt in progress right now that is made of batiks. It’s Cathedral Stars by Bonnie Hunter. It’s my first attempt with batiks and it’s going very well. They do have a different feel but the colors are just gorgeous! Thank you for the chance to win! I love Star Spangled Sky and think it would be a wonderful QOV project!
I have used batiks, I would love to make this quilt…
I’m currently English Paper Piecing a batik and black tumbling blocks in a star layout. So far, it’s 1/2 queen size. It’s striking, even if I say so myself. I’ve collected batiks for years and love them. Batik fabrics often find themselves in my scrappy quilts too. I love ’em!
I love batiks and have made several quilts with them! I love your quilt, looks great!
I have one UFO done in batiks, need to get it out and get it finished now that it has come back into my memory;) Too many projects and not enough time. Love your quilt such beautiful colors. Thanks for the chance to win a Jelly Roll.
I have used batiks and I love using them. It was the first lap size quilt I made and I haven’t actually finished it yet but I plan to finish it this year as I really love the batiks I used. Your quilt turned out beautiful and I like your stars and swirls.
I’ve made several quiilts with batiks and love working with them in piecing and in applique. I am very lucky to have a quilt shop within a couple of miles that has a very large selection of batiks. I like your choice of quilt design in the white border.
Great quilt – I love the quilting!
I haven’t used batiks yet!
I discovered batiks several years ago and thought I didn’t like them. Now I don’t really like to quilt with anything else. I guess you could say I’m addicted to them! My latest project is a dragonfly quilt with all the dragonflies being made of batiks. It should be finished by now but my job, yard work and garden take most of my time. Thanks for the opportunity to win a jelly roll.
I didn’t have a chance to work with them so far, but I really like the looks of them. Hopefully someday soon :)
Yeay for Ruby, the quilt-beagle! I like this quilt for its addition of greens that keeps it from looking like an exclusively QOV quilt. Thanks for the chance at the give away, too!
I loved this quilt when I first saw it last night. As far as batiks, it’s very strange because a little more than two years ago I started learning about quilting and I was not fond of batiks at all. Now, however after following Connie’s blog at Freemotion by the River for a long time now, She uses a lot of batik and I just love the wonderful colors in all her quilts so I’ve started really loving batik so while I haven’t made anything yet using batiks, I do have plans to do so very soon.
I think the reason I wasn’t fond of batik fabrics when I first became more interested in quilting is because I was seeing quilts using batiks with beige backgrounds or muddled blah colors (to my eyes anyway) that, for lack of a better description, looked almost dirty because of the colors in themand somewhat boring colors in them, not the goreous colorful colors Connie has shown in her quilts and also now in yours. This quilt you’ve made is a using beautiful shades of blue which I just love.
Thank you for the great tutorial Jo. It’s a gorgeous quilt.
I love batiks! I’m currently working on 2 EPP projects using batiks. I love them for needle turn appliqué and love the colors for quilts.
I have never made a project using batiks, but it is on my list to do.
Loverking with batiks. Have made several quilts using batiks. Love the star quilt pattern.
This quilt is gorgeous–just pops !! I love working with Batiks–seems to always give an extra dimension to the project. Thanks for sharing your creativitiness!!
I have not made a project with batiks yet but decided that I am going to change that by making this quilt.
Batiks, love, love, love them. Have made four batik quilts…..just finished Farmer’s Wife in batiks, it looks so good (if I say so myself). Thanks for the giveaway.
I am making a cathedral windows quilt with batiks. I love your star spangled sky quilt!
I love your quilt – I am going to add this one to my “to do” list. I have made a quilt using batiks- it’s been awhile. Thanks for the chance to win!
I love batiks. Right now I’m hand sewing the binding if a wall hanging using the pattern Rays of Hope by Carol Doak. If I had to choose just one type of material to sew/quilt with for the rest of my life it would be batiks because if find them so versatile and yummy to work with. Thank you for the chance at your giveaway.
I love batiks! I’ve made a wallhanging and a coin purse so far. I’m a fabric addict, so of course I’d love to win some more! I also love finding bargains at goodwill. I enjoy your blog…
I have never used batiks in any of my quilts but would love this to be my first!
I just finished a batik Illusions Twister top:) Love batiks!!!!
I have incorporated batiks in a few projects but never made anything using ONLY batiks. I think I need to though, the quilt is beautiful!
I used batiks in several quilts aND I LIKE THE FEEL OF THEM. ALSO EASY TO WORK WITH
Beautiful quilt and I love working with Batiks…..I bet you will love them now!
I have used batiks with regular cottons in an applique quilt that I did, but I haven’t done piecing with them. I love the colors and patterns in batiks and I think they bring someting special to a quilt! I’d love a batik jelly roll.
I have never had the experience of using batiks… I love the colors I have seen and would love to try but the finances sometimes limit my ability to use certain fabrics. Would love to win this and try my hand.
I have made five quilts using batiks. I have also made several small wall hangings and doll quilts. I love working with them.
I haven’t made a quilt using batiks, (I am in fact still working on my first ever quilt) yours looks beautiful. Could you explain the difference between batiks and normal fabric – I have never been able to find out? Thank you.
I’ve made 2 quilts using batiks. The first was a mystery quilt and the second was a quilt using flying geese I received in a block exchange. I love using batiks as you don’t have to worry about which side is the “right” side. I had the flying geese quilt sent out to be quilted and I haven’t taken the time yet to quilt the other. I’m curious to know whether or not I’ll be able to tell the difference when I quilt it since batiks have a tighter weave. Thanks for the opportunity!
Beautiful quilt. I love batiks and have made several quilts using them–also have a lovely stash of tem for future quilts! I find that using a ‘microsharp’ rather than ‘universal’ needle helps when sewing batiks, due to tighter weave. Love that they have two ‘right’ sides!
I recently used batiks for the first time…I really liked the finished product and will likely use them again soon! Thanks so much…love the Moda Bake Shop project – it might be just what my daughter was looking for as a pattern for a wedding quilt.
I’ve used batiks in many projects — usually combining them with “regular” prints. I like their depth of color. I really like your quilt and it is so appropriate for Memorial Day.
Love batiks, love Edyta and have mdde two of her quilts using friendship triangles – Tree of Live and a basket quilt using her friendship strips – both batik. Love them – and love Edyta.
Do love batiks! Such rich colors. I made Tonga Rhapsody in a BOM at Country Stitchin’ quilt shop.
I just love your quilt Jo! Those colors are right up my alley! Yes, I’ve made several quilts with batiks – they are my favorite fabrics!!!

Yes, I just finished my second batik project & I just love them! Nice crisp fabric & no right or wrong side!
I am currently machine quilting my first batik quilt. I love the fabrics and won’t hesitate to make another batik project in the future. Thanks for the wonderful pattern and for the chance at your giveaway.
I bought my first batik jelly roll this year, but haven’t used it yet. I’m so bad. I really enjoy your blog. We are farmers in Texas. So I relate to a lot of your themes, and I love your quietly things. Keep it up.
I have only used batiks as part of a quilt, and love the intensity of colour of the ones I used. I am collecting batiks to make a quilt using the 3 Ducks in a Row pattern by Judy Niemeyer which will be my first fully batik quilt. I have nearly enough fabric to start.
Beautiful work! Batiks – I’ve played around with batiks, but never made a whole project with batiks … I love the look of batiks, and plan to use them more!
I love batiks. In fact, several of my UFO’s are batiks! With this jelly roll I could create another one! LOL
I love this quilt and have to make it!!!
.I love that quilt. I have not made anything with batiks but I bought some fat quarters and plan on making a table runner one of these days.
Love that quilt—perfect colors for summer!!
I’ve made a quilt using batiks and black. It looks like stained glass!
Thanks for the great pattern and putting it on Moda Bakeshop. I do enjoy working with batiks and will mix them with regular cotton fabric in a quilt at times.
What a beautiful quilt! Your quilting looks beautiful too.
I’ve made two quilt tops using batik strips. I got them from Connecting Threads and I absolutely love the texture and quality of these batiks. Can’t recommend them enough. Thanks so much for sharing your quilt pattern and the giveaway.
I have made table runners with batik fabric. I love how the designs are made. Thanks for the opportunity to enter to win a jelly roll. Your quilt is just beautiful.
I have sewed with batiks several times. I bought the rest of a bolt of a pretty pink batik and used it in my Easy Street. I love the way it sews and the fact that a true batik doesn’t have a right or wrong side. I would love to win a jelly roll here. And I love your quilt!
I used a turquoise batik for the background fabric of my ocean life quilt. I am also stocking up to make another “undersea” quilt for someone else.
I made a quilt for son #2 with batiks, he loves it :)
