Last week I was busy making Rhubarb Bread (I shared the recipe for that here). In the cook book on the adjoining page was a recipe that said “Good Rye Bread”. Well the kitchen was already a mess and Hubby and I both love rye bread so why not give it a try… I am so glad I did!! (Pardon the mis-shaped one on the right)
We both loved the bread. It was super easy and it stayed moist.
Here’s the recipe:
1 pkg yeast
2 c warm water
1/4 cup sugar
2 cups rye flour
2 cups white flour
Mix well then add
salt to your liking
2 Tablespoons shortening
5 cups more white flour
Caraway seeds to you liking (I skipped them)
Let rise to double. Put into loaves. (my loaf pans where busy with rhubarb bread so I just made round loaves on a bar stone I have). Bake at 375 for an hour. I didn’t bake that long….
A simple very basic recipe but it was VERY good. I’ll be making this many more times.
That DOES look good! Adding it to my menu this week.
Oh, now I have to find some rye flour! Even though hubs is diabetic and can’t eat that much bread, I’m just going to have to make this!! Thanks for sharing!!!
