German Apple Rolls

These are a real favorite of our family and a great way to use up some of the many apples the tree gave us this year.

NOTE:  a small t means teaspoons..a large T Tablespoons

Take
1 1/2 cups flour
2 t baking powder
1/2 c shortening

Chop the shortening into the flour mixture (like pie crust or baking powder biscuits).  When it is in small flour chunks add 3/4 cup milk.  Make into a dough.  Add enough more flour to make the dough able to handle.  Roll out as shown.

Chop up 4 cups of apples and mix in cinnamon to taste.  I typically add 1 t cinnamon and 1/2 c sugar.  Roll up and cut 1 1/2″ wide segments like when making cinnamon rolls.  Put rolls in pan.

Mix 1 cup of cold water and 1/2 c sugar.  Pour over rolls.  Bake at 375 for 40 minutes.  When you take them out, they’ll look like this.

These are wonderful warm and good cold too.  When you scoop them out, flip them upside down.  Add a squirt of Redi Whip and YUM!!

The recipe sounds a little complicated if you aren’t used to baking but honestly, they aren’t hard…and definitely worth the time.

    As you can tell,I am a part time Hereford rancher and full time teacher in saskatchewan, Canada and I love your recipe. Looks really simple and tasty. I have only made three quilts this year as I only make queen size and hand quilt all. I love your pattern and your son’s quilt.

    Sounds (and looks) devine! We have a few bags of apples that are sitting there looking at me, asking to be made into pies…but I think a batch of these are going into the oven in about 20 mins!! YUMMMMMMM!

    Reminds me of the caramel apple rolls my Mum used to make it was my fave dessert of all time. She mixed raisins in with the apples & poured over a brown sugar and water mix before baking. Then served them with thick country cream, oh Mumma!

    Yum!
    Question, do they come out gooey? Or similar to a cinnamon roll in texture? I have never heard of putting a cup of water over your dough and I don’t care for things like bread pudding so was wondering about the final texture.

    All of my kids are rather sensitive to others and their feelings and needs but my youngest son is the first to give a hug and talk me down from the roof. :)
