Friday Hospital Update

We finally got Kramer’s pain under control to a tolerable level at about 11:00am today.  As I write it’s about 3pm.  He’s super sleepy now. I think the fight against the pain pooped him out.  He says if he stays still the pain is around a 3 on a scale of one to ten.  He said he can be content and live with that if he has to but what he had this morning was terrible.

Lindsay his pain doc is awesome.  Really awesome.  She has been to his room four times today working to get the right combination of meds to help.

Kramer did get better in time to go to radiation.  That was a big blessing.  As of today he FIVE left.  YAHOO!!  We are getting so close.  I can’t wait.

His best guesstimate as to when we can go home is now on Sunday.  He can’t go home until the pain can be controlled on oral medication.  Right now the pain is under control but not on oral meds.  UGH.

So here’s my report:I did my blood test, and the scan.  Then I met with my doctor.

My scan is clear.  So that means there is no detectable thyroid cancer.  That doesn’t mean it isn’t returning as my blood work indicates it is back.  So here I am in limbo land not really knowing.  Previously I was going back for testing every six months.  This time, with my blood work numbers high, I am returning in September instead of the full six months.  That’s okay….I got a reprieve and I am going to take it.  I can focus on Kramer for now.  That’s what I prayed for.

Some one asked that we put a Paypal button in the right column of the blog.  We did.  I’ve shown the Paypal balance to Kramer and he is in shock.  You guys have blown him away with all the wonderful donations.  How blessed we are!!  THANKS.

More from here at the hospital at another time.

  2. I’m happy you’ve had a reprieve on your health issues! Now if only Kramer’s pain can be kept under control! Of course you will continue in my prayers. So many readers support you and want to lend our strength to you. I’m not at all surprised that the response toPaypal has been substantial.

I’ve spent too much time lately at the hospital too. My DH has an enlarged Prostrate and it has created Sepsis x2. He has a foley in. We went to see a specialist who does laser removal (Ho Lep) On Wed. We got a date for the surgery for this month even though we had been told he was booked until JULY!!!!!
That night DH spiked a fever up to 103.4 I packed him up to the Hospital Yep Septic AGAIN! BUT tomorrow is our YOUNGEST wedding day. He has stabilized enough to get a FURLOUGH!!!! 11AM to 9 PM for the special occasion then back to the hospital. I will be taking my thermometer and I won’t be afraid to use it! If he spikes another temp he has to go back sooner.

  6. Praying for pain stabilization, help for his neck, and good results from the radiation!
Carolyn, I’m also putting your husband in my prayers. My Bible Study group is praying also.

  7. Had to come back and check for your evening post. I have been praying and will continue. Thank you so much for the updates. I’m so glad to hear your test came back clear and hope it stays that way. Praying Kramer’s pain remains controlled even better than 3. Praying that this radiation really fights well too. Mostly praying also that God’s presence is comforting and strengthening to you both and to your family. The Lord reminds me frequently throughout the day and sometimes in the night to keep praying for you. You are in His heart and in mine too.

I’m joining the the prayer warriors in this battle you and Kramer are fighting. If one can put a thousand to flight and two ten thousand then all these praying friends are having a great effect for you thanks for the good news about you. And rest in the fact God is bringing you through this firey trial. Keep on trusting in Jesus.

  10. I’m so glad the scan was clear. Thankful for that! The prayers continue and I hope that Kramer’s pain will remain controlled. I appreciate the updates!

  11. I know the updates must be an effort for you to do, but thank you so much for keeping us abreast of what’s happening.
The only advice I have to offer to anyone dealing with bad/difficult to control pain is: once you have the pain under control with meds, do NOT cut back on your meds or make any changes whatsoever…even if you are feeling so much better. Do not change anything about the dosage you are taking without explicit directions from your doctor. If you cut back/stop meds and the pain returns, you might not ever be able to get back to that comfortable spot again.
Jo and Kramer….I will keep you all in my prayers.
Carolyn, I will keep you and your husband in my prayers as well. I hope you both will be able to enjoy the wedding tomorrow!

Hi Jo — so glad progress is being made with Kramer’s pain management and that your scan is clear. Bless you all.

  13. So happy for you Jo that you got a clear scan! Now to get hubby’s pain under control and back home! Still praying for you and your family!

I am so glad he is doing better with the pain. I can’t understand why they are trying to control the pain with pills. When my husband was sick they had him on pain patches(150 mgs) on a 3 day rotation. And he told me much later they barely kept it under control. The pain patches were fentenal( my spelling may be wrong) but it’s the drug they are cutting the street drugs with. I am really glad you got a brake on your problem. Sometimes the Lord knows we can’t handle any more now. Just hang in there, I promise it will get better.

  15. Once again, thanks for the update. So nice to see a glimmer of hope during this difficult time. Sending more love and prayers.

  16. I hope that Roger is telling the truth when he says his pain level is at 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. Men (and my father-in-law especially) don’t like to admit how much pain they are in, so they often will say a lower number, when their pain is really higher. This in turn creates a difficulty in correct assessment of pain, which sets up false numbers of pain level. It becomes even more confusing as the pain progresses because the patient realizes the pain is getting worse and worse faster and faster, because he didn’t admit to the correct pain level to start with.
Fentanyl patches are very useful, and come in a variety of dosage levels.
Every day together is a blessing, Jo. Best Wishes!
