Dishwasher Update

So remember me telling you about my dishwasher….Read it HERE if you missed it.

Well the “fix” that Craig and I thought we did…didn’t work.  UGH.  I was so disappointed.  I debated back and forth….do I call a repair person or do I put the money I’d spend on a repair person toward a new dishwasher.  I debated for a couple days.  I had more or less made the descision to get a new but thought I’d ask the opinion of the kids first.

So I went on the Messenger ap and asked in our family chat what everyone thought.   I said, I was thinking that I’d get a new dishwasher but wondered if I was giving up to quick.  Well…then Kalissa chimed in and said, “Can you wait until Thursday?”  Well this was Thanksgiving week when this happened and I was frustrated.  I really didn’t care if the dishwasher was $10 cheaper because of Black Friday.  I wanted what I wanted and doubted the one I wanted was on sale.  So I wrote back and said, “No, I didn’t want to wait for Black Friday for a dishwasher”.  I wrote that if I told Buck what I wanted, he could likely bring it when he came for Thanksgiving.

That’s when I got a phone call from Kalissa telling me that I ruin every surprise.  Here that’s what the kids were planning to do for me for birthday/Christmas.  UGH.

Well we soon found out that getting a dishwasher wasn’t as easy as we thought.  It had to be ordered….and it wouldn’t be here for Thanksgiving.  UGH….So I spent two weeks washing dishes by hand.

On Friday the 13th, the boys installed my dishwasher.

I love it.  Although the kids offered to pay for it, I opted to get a better model and pay for part of it myself.  This is the one I got….

The reason I picked it…it has a third rack at the top.  See?
It’s just a narrow rack but it’s perfect for odd things like knives and scrapers….sippy cup lids, bottle nipples and the like.

I used to have all of that in my top rack and it took up so much room.  I didn’t know if was an option until I started looking at dishwashers.

Of course that third rack raised the price but I was okay with that.

I did a big debate on color.  I had all white appliances in my kitchen.  At the time we bought them we wanted something more classic and stainless was more expensive.  Well that ship has sailed.  WHITE is now more expensive than stainless.  I decided to get stainless.  Now all the appliances don’t match but I’m okay with that.  The dishwasher is on a different wall from the the stove and refrigerator so it’s not as noticeable.  With my refrigerator luck, I’ll need one of those in a couple years…so I’ll upgrade those then.

This dishwasher is MUCH quieter.  Part of me was really frustrated that the old washer didn’t last longer…but if you think about it, we will soon have been in this house for five years.  I’ve done childcare the whole time.  Most days, I do two loads a day…occasionally three.  Many people only use their dishwasher every other day….so I am using a dishwasher much more than most people…so I guess five years isn’t terrible in my case.

This is one of those cases where people think childcare providers “make so much money”…we have lots of expenses like new dishwashers too.

For curious minds:
This is the one I bought. Link HERE.

Zoom in on Primary ImageI preferred the controls to be hidden but I did want that third rack.  It was a compromise and so far, the childcare kiddos have left the buttons alone.

It was on sale when we ordered it.  It was about $150 cheaper than shown here.

A big shout out to Craig for helping me try to fix the old one, to Buck for picking it up and delivering…to Buck and Karl for installing it and the girls for paying for part of it.  I really think it was the right choice to get a new one.  I didn’t realize how badly the old one needed to be replaced until I see how REALLY clean my dishes are now.  As far as dishwashing goes…I couldn’t be happier.

It’s funny how people have different chores they like…I like washing dishes by hand. My parents have always had a dishwasher and so did I until I moved to the farm in 2005. There is a dishwasher, but back then, to run it I had to go outside and turn on the water pump (gravity-fed water from a cistern and only used the pump when I needed to fill the cistern or had 3 hoses going to water the lawn), then remember to turn off the pump when the dishwasher was finished, so it was easier to do them by hand. I love looking out the window and washing dishes after every meal. Even when I have 12 for dinner! The dishwasher is still there but I would like to get rid of it and have more cupboard space. You certainly got a spiffy dishwasher that totally suits your needs!

Looks like a nice dishwasher – I enjoy my whirlpool dishwasher -you got a nice third rack there – I can see that being extra handy. Hidden controls would be a nice feature but looks like yours are not obvious anyway. And cherish all the pictures of your Ruby :)

  3. That third rack would have sold me, too. Thanks for sharing. I will need a new one soon. Mine is 10 yrs old. The rack wore out sooner than the motor. It costs almost the price of a new dishwasher for a new rack, so why bother replacing? Such a waste!
I see pretty Ruby in your photo. ☹️ God bless you and comfort you.

  4. I don’t know how much extra that 3rd rack was, but I have to believe it’s worth it! Sure wish my new dishwasher had that! It drives me crazy that there is no where for spatulas, etc. to go!

  5. That 3rd rack is nifty. Lol it’s funny how happy we can be with gift appliances, sheets and other non-usual gift items. Jo, do you or any of your followers have a recommendation for a washer. We replaced ours 2 years ago and it is a lemon. We have had so many problems with it GE stopped responding to my calls for service while it was under warranty. My husband finally agreed to just replace it. I would appreciate any suggestions. You can send me a message through Facebook (Messenger) as GayleChuck Shumaker. Thank you

  6. We had to buy a new dishwasher this summer. Looks like we got one just like yours. :) That upper, shallow rack is really handy, too! Good choice. ;)

  7. I love the idea of a 3rd rack! My daughter with 2, soon to be 3, toddlers so needs that! I struggle to get all the kids cups, lids, etc. into the current dishwasher when I’m visiting. Thanks for the info about this. What a great group of adult children you have to plan/purchase/install this for you!

  8. Congratulations on your new dishwasher! I know many think it’s lousy gift but it really is a great one, especially when your old one doesn’t work! I’ve never seen a dishwasher with a 3rd rack – very neat!
And how wonderful everyone came together to get it for you and install it! Such a blessing!
    Love and prayers

  9. We also had to replace our dishwasher this week, but it was 11 years old so can’t complain too much. We picked the model with the 3rd upper rack and it is wonderful. There have been so many improvements in dishwashers, so much more space and much quieter. I love my Christmas gift!

  10. I have lived in my house almost 20 years. All my appliances were new at the time. I am on my 3rd refrigerator, 2nd microwave and 2nd dishwasher. Nothing last anymore. I like that 3rd rack. If I have to replace mine I will look into that. I don’t like the hidden controls so it would work for me.

  11. That 3rd rack TOTALLY would have sold me!! How quiet is your new dishwasher? I’m hoping for one that you can barely hear next time. Better yet, one that you need a light on the floor to even know that it is running! :o))

  12. I have been in this house for almost 30 years and still the original dishwasher. Of course it still has the “free” soap taped on the inside. It is still a virgin.

  13. Grew up washing dishes for a family of 7 so feel your pain doing dishes by hand for 2 weeks. My husband and I used to laugh about budgeting for a new appliance every Christmas. Everything from telephones to dishwashers to washer/dryer. Last year was the first in several years again we didn’t replace an appliance but we moved so everything in the kitchen was new. Waterpump on the washer went out end of January…. Enjoy your new tool.
