Cross Stitch Finish: Tom Turkey Sampler

I have a cross-stitch finish to share with you today. I finished my Tom Turkey Sampler from Heart in Hand. I had seen so many finish this and have it with their Fall things. Last year I bought the chart and this year I finally finished it. I think it’s so cute with the turkey on it.

I stitched mine on 40 count Heartland from Picture This Plus. I used the color Used Brick for the stitching. The linen was a great color for the pattern…and just a heads up. The Stitchery Nook just got in a shipment of Picture This Plus linen.

I knew right away that I wanted to finish mine like the pattern. Do you notice the checked fabric is placed on the diagonal, then linen then the checked fabric is squared up? I liked that look. Now to see if I had any checked fabric.

I did have a good fabric that I was pleased with. I cut a diagonal strip. This is always a little tricky so I spray starched the fabric really well. I only put a strip that was 3/4″ wide.

I sewed that piece in.

Then I trimmed and put interfacing on the back of the stitched piece and the backing piece.

I sewed around the outside. I stuffed it and then hated it. There was too much space between the stitching and the first bias-cut strip of fabric.

So I unstuffed it and took it partially apart. I trimmed it. I restuffed, resewed and finally hand stitched the opening shut.

Ah…MUCH BETTER!!

Here are the two side by side. You can see it looks much more proportionate in the final one on the right.

I added a 2023 charm, buttons on a gourd pin along with a little piece of fabric.

I’m pleased with it and glad I took the time to stitch it. My little corner is about full now…Oh my. I do have several Fall pieces now. It would be good if I would stitch a few smalls for other seasons.

Thanks f

  1. Such a great finish!! The fabric is a perfect match.I always like seeing how you do your finishes because they seem to be perfect and give me a good example of how to finish a piece.

  2. My Tom Turkey is out with 3 other fall pieces and it makes me happy! I also like that you show us finishing ideas. You’re so helpful!

  3. Love the Tom Turkey sampler! Nice color choices and the finishing touches are perfect. You have some beautiful displays in your home. Everything looks like it belongs where it is. I wish that I could do cross stitching as I love the look of it so much. I have a few pieces that I bought but I can’t afford to buy a lot more.
