Cross Stitch Finish: Three Flower Pillow

After I went to Maker’s Market, I’ve been in the mood to spruce up my Spring decorations. When I went to a retreat last year, someone was there with cross-stitch goodies. There were patterns and finished stitched pieces. Apparently, her friend had passed away, and the husband asked her to distribute things to other stitchers who would appreciate them. I ended up picking up these three little stitched pieces. I think they were meant to be fobs.

I picked these because I knew I was short on Spring finishes…and I had an idea to finish them all as one piece.

I trimmed them all to the same size, leaving a 3/4″ border. Then I cut some 3/4″ fabric strips. I sewed them together as shown.

I cut larger outer border pieces, then sewed them on.

I put interfacing on the front and back pieces…then sewed them together, leaving an opening for turning at the bottom of the pieces.

I trimmed the corners and turned the piece right side out, making sure to nicely poke out the corners.

I stuffed it with a combo of Poly-fil and crushed walnut shells.

I had picked this rick-rack for the edge, but it was all wrinkly. I ended up ironing it.

This is the stitch I used to secure it. When I came to the end, I pinned it in place so I could match the wave of the rick-rack.

I am so happy with this. Didn’t it turn out so cute?? So springy.

I can’t wait to put it in my cabinet and show it off this Spring.

I hope I did justice to the gift of another’s stitching, and she’d be happy with my finishing.

Jo, you have a real talent in being able to make such creative projects? Another win on a lovely finish!

  4. The pillow is adorable. What a great idea to stitch them together as one. Thanks for showing how you stitched down the rick rack. It adds such a nice design element. Would you kindly explain the process of adding the crushed walnut shells and poly-fil? I am always disappointed with the results of my stuffing efforts! Thanks!

    1. I’ll try to do a video of me next time I finish a pillow. I’m finding lots of people are confused about that and that the only way to explain it might be through a video.

  5. LOVE that lime green polka dot!!!!! It’s the perfect fabric for this project. It is a great idea! Very creative of you!
