Cross Stitch Finish: Spring Pillow

I have another cross stitch finish!! I’m so excited as I got it done in plenty of time to display this Spring.

I started the stitching and finished it in a day. It was a simple stitch. Once I had everything memorized, I didn’t even need to look at the chart.

It was a freebie from Glory Bee. You can find the freebie HERE. I looked and looked for a better version of the chart, but didn’t find any.

Well, I was ready for some cute things for my decor, so I jumped in and finished it right away. Luckily, I already had an idea of how I wanted to finish it. I needed some green fabric. I thought this would do just fine. I like to use small-scale prints for projects like this.

I cut a piece and added it to the stitched piece.

Then I made a backing like this…Leaving the whole in the back will allow me to turn it right side out and to stuff it.

Both pieces got interfacing on the wrong sides.

Then I sewed the two pieces together. I often make the backing bigger than the front with I do this. That allows for shifting.

I trimmed the corners and turned it right side out. Hmm. This wasn’t what I envisioned. There was too much green for me.

I turned it wrong side out, took it to the cutting table, and whacked off about 3/4″ of fabric.

I resewed the edge, retrimmed the corners, and turned it right side out. Yes. This was MUCH better.

I stuffed it with a combo of crushed walnut shells and Poly-fil.

I ladder-stitched the opening closed. Then I headed to the trim. I wanted something to jazz it up. I came up with this yellow twine. I have pink that I tried first. It looked cute, but it’s not often that I have a good opportunity to use the yellow, so I went with yellow.

I just love it. I stitched it with DMC…I did modify the called for colors. They were really bright. I toned them down a bit.

I love it when I can stitch a freebie with DMC and use things that I have here to finish it. Cross-stitch doesn’t have to be an expensive hobby. If you are new to stitching and want to try a project, this one is absolutely perfect.

Yahoo…another cutie for my dough bowl is done!!

  1. This is adorable! Such a good addition to your dough bowl. Yes it is fun to have basically a free piece. I was watching one of your old YouTube videos today in which you mentioned making freebie (I don’t remember your exact word) quilts – quilts from scraps, either yours or donated.

  2. Barb from upstate NY

Prayers are being done for you, Jo. I don’t have as good an attitude as yours with an annoying knee! You are amazing!

I too was hoping someone would come up with a better copy of the SPRING pattern. Anyone have it in your files! The link Jo provided isn’t quite legible for me when printed off. I’d be more than happy to pay for postage if anyone let me know they had a copy.

  3. So cute. What is the name of the pattern or designer of the long skinny Easter alphabet cross stitch at the bottom of your picture? I would like to make both of these pieces (the freebie tulip piece) for my Easter decor!!!

    1. The long skinny pillow is a Lizzie Kate design. Maybe it’s called Spring String??? You’d have to find it at 123stitch. They are the only ones who have the Lizzie Kate designs.

  4. A silly question. Could you explain how to stuff with the cherished walnut seeds and polyfil? I just can’t seem to get it right.
Love your posts and sends prayers for cancer remission
