Cross Stitch Finish: Spring Awakens

Last week on Friday, I decided I needed to get some cross stitch items finished. With all that has been going on with me personally and health-wise, some things have fallen behind. One thing is finishing my cross stitch pieces. I have several things that need to be fully finished.

I prioritized Spring things as I was changing out my Valentines things to Spring things.

I finishes Spring Awakens right after writing last week’s cross stitch update. I decided I’d really like this in my Spring dough bowl so I finished it first.

I started by trimming it down.

I found this fabric for the backing. I thought it was perfect.

I put interfacing on the back of the stitched piece. Then I cut a larger piece of backing and batting. I did a cross-hatch design on the back.

Then, with right side together, I stitched around the piece, leaving an opening at the bottom.

I trimmed everything down, even the corners, then turned it right sides out.

I stuffed it with a combo of Poly-fil and crushed walnut shells. Then I used a ladder stitch to close the opening.

I picked a yarn that matched. I cut three long lengths and then braided them together.

Once it was braided, I hand stitched it into place.

Here it is all finished…I’m pleased with how it turned out.

I’m glad I stitched this one…it’s so cute and Springy. I’m so ready for Spring. I did not put the string from the wagon to the male bunny. I still have grandkids around who like to touch things. That string would be a big temptation. I’ll add it in a couple of years once the kiddos grow up a bit.

  1. Yet another winner! Such a pretty finish! The backing and trim are perfect for this sweet piece. Perfect for spring!

  2. Perfect finish!
Like you, I’m ready for spring. We had a beautiful day here in Wisconsin yesterday with 68 degree temps, but snow is in the forecast. Wish Mother Nature would make up her mind!

  3. Oh my goodness, what can I say but !!
    That is so darn cute.
I love the way you braided the yarn, that is a perfect touch.
    Those bunnies are so precious.
What is the reason for the crushed walnuts !!
Did I miss something or have I forgotten the reasoning for crushed walnuts?
    Take care

    1. Crushed Walnuts give the piece a little weight so they stay sitting in the bowl the way I like. It also helps the piece fill out. In my early days I used sand but the crushed walnuts are nicer I think.

  4. I’d love to see how you make your braid. You said it was yarn……is that floss……the spool shown in the last photo?
