Community Quilts from Ray

Ray shared a few quilts with me and now, I’m sharing them with you!

He writes:

Yup, I finished another community quilt. This one is from Lena E. in VA.

She basically made a square in a square quilt but then she added a triangle in the corners of the blocks to create diamonds. Great addition.

I typically use a motif with lots of curves to soften the straight lines in this style of quilt. Well, I threw the idea out the window and used a motif based on squares and blocks.

Because I used a neutral thread on the top, it is not that noticeable. However, I used a light tan fabric for the backing and a royal blue thread on the back. WOW!!

My thanks to you and Lena for your generous support.

This is one of the quilt tops that Alice W. in NY sent to me to finish and to donate.

I really had fun with this quilt. At first it struck me as a bit different and then I developed a theory and then I had a plan. When you first look at the quilt, it looks like a panel quilt without the panel. My guess is that she was testing a border for a panel quilt. She substituted a piece of fabric for the panel and then sent me the test model. Since I basically had a blank canvas in the center, I went with a motif that would add to the quilt.

I selected a motif with deer, moose, bear and pine tree along with black thread. Now the center has some more character and someone is going to have a western wildlike quilt.

I had some red and black buffalo plaid fabric to use for the backing.

My thanks to you and Alice for allowing me to have some fun with this wonderful community quilt.

I would love to make the first quilt Ray shared. I think it would be so fun with some novelty prints…maybe Iowa Hawkeyes?? John Deere?? I love the second quilt too. Wouldn’t it work great with a panel just as Ray said? I can see myself making that one too. So fun to see the great inspiration.

Thanks Ray, Alice, and Lena…your work is great…your generosity stunning.

  1. These quilts are really wonderful. The second one is so interesting – I’m wondering what size the panel would have been. Also wondering if the border was too busy for the panel. Still, its really neat!
I do like the square within the square and those added triangles make it really pop!
    Love and prayers

  2. Both of these will be great for men. We don’t see them nearly as often as feminine quilts. The boxy quilting and thread choices couldn’t have been better for the first quilt. . And the second one…oh my! The woodsy quilting pattern was made for this quilt. Ray, thank you for putting your heart into the community quilts you finish. And thanks to the “piecemakers” who have the vision and skills to make the quilt tops.

  3. Both are very nice quilts. I really like the square in a square with the snowballed corners creating the hourglass. The quilting in the second quilt is superb – great motif! Thanks to all those creative minds!
