Community Quilts from Karin

Karin has been on a roll. This time around, she has a couple scrappy fun quilts. Karin writes:

Hi Jo, it’s Karin again,  from sunny and hot (just the way i like it, uh-huh!) FL. I am ready to share 2 more finishes from you very generous blog readers. This one came from Clara, and was backed by  generous yardage provided by Bonny H, a self-proclaimed fabric collector. Some one, perhaps Clara, had already marked one row for quilting, so I just went with her plan and put some thread to it.

Worked well enough for me, so I just continued the pattern through the outer border. I believe I quilted it with purple thread on top and in the bobbin.

Now, this one has an interesting back story. One day, a huuuuge box arrived,  addressed to me, from Texas. No name, outside, no not inside, and I couldn’t make out the town. LVF? LUF? ok, yes, I absolutely should have looked up the zip code. But, hubby was gathering for a recycle run, so I hurried to include this big box. I believe there were at least 5 quilts in there, most, including this one, had their own backing. Often, I get tops in that patiently wait on the shelf until I find/get/buy enough coordinating yardage that I can back them properly. Not this time, not only were backings included, but also polyester batting. Ringing bells for anyone?  Thank you, Ms Anonymous Texas.

This kitty was appliqued onto strip blocks, so I didn’t want to just edge to edge it. I ended up doing hearts and loops everywhere except the cat, and swirls on the cat alone. Wishbones in the outer border and continuous hearts in the wide white strips finished it out, and I found the perfect turquoise binding, in my stash, already made, and it was exactly enough to go all the way around. See, that’s why we hoard/collect stuff!

Thank you all, whomever and wherever you might be! These two sweeties are also going to the local battered women’s shelter next week.

 Unfortunately,  we have such a nice climate, but our cost of living is so high (thank you hurricanes!) we end up with a large homeless population,  and that often proves to be a stressful situation that makes a lot of men angry, and they take it out on the women and kids. So we have a huge and hugely underserved population that really has no other option. These quilts provide emotional and physical comfort and are often the only thing they own.

What fun quilts, and isn’t it always fun to get something anonymously? I sure love that!!

Great work on the quilts, ladies…I hope we get to see more from the anonymous person in Texas. We’re all curious about what else is in the big box!! Isn’t it wonderful that we can help others with our quilting?
