Community Quilts from Karin

On Sunday I gave you a little parade of quilts from Karin. Today I’m featuring another round. Karin is so prolific!!

She writes:
Staying with Clare and Anonymous, we have number 4 in our parade…at first, I thought, how in the world did Clare, in Arkansas, get a hold of undersea fabric??  Closer inspection made me realize it’s WOODLAND themed, with mushrooms, ferns and flowers. 

Definitely not what I saw first, lol. That totally changed my quilting plans!  Instead of using waves with some bubble strands thrown in, I went with fern-y feathers going across the mottled batik center square/rectangle.  And, if you look closely, you’ll see that Clare took her time and made all the borders facing the right direction!!  All the little mushroom tops were facing up!  My OCD thanks you!!!

I used purple thread in the needle and orange in the bobbin, to coordinate with the very pretty orange yardage swirl donated by Anonymous. I appreciate ALL donations, truly I do, but I especially love it when the pieces are big enough I can make a backing with just one seam!! This beauty finished up at 52×60, so it’s gonna be just right for a young teen!

Moving East, back to Nelle, in Stillwater, OK now, we have finish number 5. She provided the top and coordinating back for this 40×44 charmer.

Kites are made for wind, right? So what else could I do but swirls?  I used silver thread in the needle and bobbin and practiced non -directional swirls in the block section and echo swirls in the outside border.

Stitch in the ditch made the inner border puff just a wee bit, as I hoped.

Here’s number 6 in our lineup, top and backing also courtesy of Nelle! This bright beauty has all kinds of fabric scraps in it, truly a one of a kind!!  You’ll see kids prints, flowers, stripes, Christmas, all kinds of colors and prints!!! It looks like it may have been a leader/ender project, with simple rectangles sewn together and alternating horizontal, vertical, horizontal, vertical for interest. 

All framed nicely with a pale yellow border and backed with a bright tomato batik. Boy, was I glad they make a variegated thread to match!! 

This one finished up at 42×54, so, it’ll be great to cuddle under!!

But wait, there’s MORE!! She’s on a roll!!

And, finally, bringing our parade to a close, another top and backing from Nelle.  I love you right up to the moon and back!!  Bunnies and bugs, birds and stars, and lime green polka dots!!  I finally got to use my very favorite, line green thread in the needle!!  It always adds such a whimsical feel to quilts, and Goodness knows, the people of Western NC need something to smile about.

Ivory thread was used in the bobbin and quilting was kept simple, with orange peels in the patchwork, hearts and loop meander in the aqua/bunny section, and individual hearts parading through the text sections and down each side. Cute, cute, cute!!! Altogether, this one finished up at 44×60 and is sure to be a comfort for years!!
