Cider Beer…YES, Please!

  • by

A month or so ago I was contacted and asked if I would be willing to try out Michelob ULTRA’s newest addition, Michelob ULTRA Light Cider. Well that was easy….free beer..yep, I’ll try that. Actually, I already drink Michelob ULTRA so trying the Light Cider version is something I would have done on my own anyway.

I told our daughter, Kelli, that I was asked to review it. She laughed and said, “Mom, have you tried cider beers? They are heavy and strong flavored.” UGH…what had I signed up for. Then I got worried that I wouldn’t be able to find it locally as it was just released on May 7th, 2012. Typically anything new doesn’t come to the Midwest very quickly. The last thing I wanted to do was run around trying to find some beer that I wouldn’t even like.

I shouldn’t have worried. I had no problem finding Michelob ULTRA Light Cider. It was at the HyVee Grocery Store. (yes, you can buy alcohol in Iowa at the grocery store) I came home and tried it right away….I really liked it. Just to make sure my taste buds were on track, I called my girlfriend and asked her if she wanted to help me do a little “research”. (taste testing) She said sure and she ended up liking it too.

I personally am not a huge fan of wine coolers. To me they are a little too sweet. Michelob ULTRA Light Cider is sweet yes, but it’s just a hint of sweetness like eating a sweet apple. If I drink a wine cooler, I just want one because the sweetness is too much for me. These are perfect and not like that at all….just to prove it, I drank another one…yes, still light, still refreshing.

I try to watch the calories and carbs I have when drinking. I am happy to report…that it has 120 calories and 10 carbs….that’s not bad. Another thing that’s great to know is that it is gluten free. While reading over the information about Michelob ULTRA Light Cider I learned that cider beer is processed much the same as regular beer only apples replace the barley and hops. I also learned that it is sweetened naturally through the apples and through stevia. (I am guessing that’s why I don’t detect that sugary taste that wine coolers have.)

All in all…I give Michelob ULTRA Light Cider a BIG THUMBS UP! I will be back to get some more because sadly..my 6 pack is empty. If I could make one suggestion to Anheuser-Busch on how to improve it, I’d say…make it 12 packs or cases!
