Double Wedding Ring Quilt Along

This week we have an easy step…but be forewarned, this is the very last easy step.  After this clue, it’s all about curves and more and more and more PINNING!!  If you thought we pinned on previous clues, there’s more pinning now.  I joke when people ask about this quilt that I think I spend more time pinning than sewing.  Well I really don’t think it’s a joke.  So much pinning goes into this quilt….but that’s for next week.  Let’s talk about this week’s clue.

We are going to attach two melons together.  It’s easy-peasy.

This is going to seem like a really awkward step and you’ll likely wonder how it’s all going to quite work.  No worries.  As long as you follow the step, I promise it will come together.

What we are doing is prepping the melons so we can attach them to the center background piece.  Like the picture shown below.  No worries that it currently isn’t laying exactly flat.  I haven’t ironed it yet.

Before we can do that…we first need to attach two melons each other.  If you lay them out as I did below, you’ll start to get the idea.

If you remember the last segment that was added to each end of the wedges were squares.  Well we’re sewing the squares together.  Notice in the picture below, I am matching up the two seams.  The top seam is pressed to the left and the back seam is pressed to the right.

Match them up but then do this…Read More »Double Wedding Ring Quilt Along

How are you doing…are you chugging along?  Just getting started?  Wherever you are, I have to move on with the next clue.  It’s okay.  Next week will be another easy week.  It will need to be as this week, there’s much work to be done.

Let’s get started.

By now you should have a pile of melons like you see at the bottom of the picture below.  You should have one wedge already attached on the melon.  Now this week, we attach the latest wedge sections that we created last week.  The new wedges should include six middle segments with a square at each end.

In the photo above you can see that I already marked the center of the background melon with a pin.  Next find the center of the wedge and with right sides together, pin it in place.

Next I pin at the seams towards the outer edge.  I make sure each seam is turned out.

Then I add the pins in between.  I pin NINE pins on each wedge.

Next up I sew.  The trick with sewing any curved seam is to remember that the only part that HAS TO BE on the 1/4′ line is what is right next to the needle.

Your left hand is really busy when sewing these guiding them along….and yes, I do sew over my pins with this as well.  I am going at such a slow speed that it really isn’t a big deal.

Here’s a stack I have all pinned and ready to go…..Read More »Double Wedding Ring Quilt Along

Hey..is anyone still quilting along with me??

First off…let me say this…DON’T TRY TO KEEP UP.  There is no way to do it.  This is an intense quilt and with lots of time that needs to go into it and it isn’t even piecing time….IT’S PINNING TIME.  I have never pinned so much in my entire life..Ever, Never, Ever!

I am going to go on with some instructions though as some people are only doing a couple rings and testing things out to see if they like it.

This week is something easy.  Ah…..

So last week we took these arches and added them onto the melon.  Remember?

Well there should have been left over ring arches….lots of them 220 of them.  Well all of those ring arches need a square on the end of them.

Happily, this is easy sewing….easy chain piecing.

Pick pieces that go with your ring arch and sew them on.  Easy Peasy.

One for the right side….

One for the left side.

Ironing is easy too.  Here’s what you do….Read More »Double Wedding Ring Quilt Along

So far we have cut.  We have sewn.  Nothing has been hard at all…RIGHT??

Well now we are starting in on where some people get intimidated.  There really is no need to feel intimidated especially for those of you who have ever sewn a garment before.  For those of you who haven’t…You can do this!!

I have a round little tote that is perfect for keeping all of my supplies….right now you only need the melon backgrounds, the wedge rings and pins…LOTS ANDS LOTS OF PINS.

You’ve heard me say that I don’t pin much.  There is an exception to the rule and this quilt is it.  I pin A LOT.  On this day, I was in the car on a road trip with Hubby driving.  I grabbed my tote and pinned away while he drove.  This is an excellent project for TV watching too.

Pinning is really important.  If you marked the middle on the curves of the melon, now is when you are going to use that line.  If you didn’t no biggie.  I don’t mark the line.  For me it’s just as easy to fold the melon in half and stick a pin there.  See how I did that in the picture below?

Now open the melon.  Leave the pin in place.  Lay a wedge ring over the top.  Match the seam line of the middle of the wedge ring to the pin.  Lift the pin and pin the wedge ring in place.

Now match up the corners and pin them in place.

Then go back and pin at each seam line.  YEP…seven pins for one piece!!  That’s why I said LOTS OF PINS.

So first one pinned…only a b-jillion more to go.

After my car ride I have quite a few pinned….

Now- time to head to the machine and sew them….In the photo below you can see that I am chain piecing.  Read More »Double Wedding Ring Quilt Along
