I was reading Dirt Road Scrapper blog. I’m behind and playing catch-up, reading about life adventures on the Ranch and catching up on quilting.
I caught a blog post about quilts from Miss Rosie, Carrie Nelson, and thought to myself I would pull out that book. I always have loved Miss Rosies quilts. They are scrappy and totally my style.
When I was pulling the book, this one was right next to it. You can find the quilt book HERE.

I’ve been tempted to weed out a few of my quilt books. So I thought this might be one I’d weed. Before I did, I thought I better page through it.
I opened the book as saw this…a cat quilt!! At the time I originally bought this book, I’m sure a cat quilt didn’t impress me. No one had cats in the family.

Things have changed, and Kalissa’s family is filled with cat lovers. Gannon is especially a cat lover. His favorite Christmas present was a journal that had cats on the cover. He just loves them and proclaims himself to be the “Cat King”.
Well, this quilt is all too girlish for Gannon…but I think he’d really love it and I’m tempted to make it. I’d love the cats to be more realistic cats colors, orange, gray, tuxedo…but what do I do with the other colors.
The quilt was originally designed to be made with charm packs, but I wouldn’t do that.
I have some scraps leftover from this quilt…By the way, this is a free pattern on the blog. You can find HERE.

I was thinking that these colors might be better for Gannon.
What do you think?
It’s hard to take a quilt that is frilly and girlish and transfer that into a boyish quilt. I’d love suggestions.

OH, I think Gannon would love a cat quilt in the boy colors you show! That would be an awesome quilt!
Go with a light blue background with the cats done in blacks,
gray, and orange. Then with dark blue or black for the accents
I love the idea of that quilt for Gannon in the colors you showed! I’m sure he’d e thrilled by it too! If you put some camo fabric on the back then he’d have his army interest as well. What fun!
Jo, I made a cat quilt for a male cousin using Stonehenge layer cake and he loved it! You could do solid or mottled cats in blacks, grays, etc (or whatever colors their cats are) and use the colors from the wedding quilt you showed for the “in between” . I tried to attach a picture but it wouldn’t let me
I bet Gannon would be thrilled with a cat quilt. He would think he was really the “cat King”!! If you did the quilt in either black and white or browns and beiges…it would be fine for him. not girly at all!!! He would treasure it for many years.
I think the idea of the cats in realistic colors is good. I would suggest finding out what Gannon’s favorite colors and go from there.
This is a very cute cat quilt. Year ago I made the cat quilt that is just all cats. I like the variation of blocks in this quilt. Another idea is to use a darker background with the darker colors you may use.
Ask him???
Without wanting to seem non-PC, I think all colors are eligible for a boy quilt except the stereotypical pink but I would definitely ask Gannon for his favorite colors and go from there. Realistic colors for the kitties, including some orange and grey stripes plus some fussy-cut placed black & white cow fabric. I like the camo backing idea or some actual cat fabric.
Your idea of some black and white cow fabric to mimic a calico is really clever.
I see it in Browns, golds and greens. Cream background. Won’t look girly that way. Piano key border in those colors, too. What fun!
Love the idea of a cat quilt and the colors in the wedding quilt would be handsome. If your up for it, you might want to put a crown on one of the quilts to help him remember when he declared himself to be the Cat King. Very thoughtful gift and you may find that more than one of your grandchildren want a cat quilt.
Maybe this it too cutesy, but what if you made a little applique crown for one of the cats and made a cat king ?
I would suggest primary colors but asking Gannon is a great idea. He could pick out the cat colors and give you imput on what colors he would like. I made my grandson a rocket ship quilt a couple of years ago when he told me he needed a bigger quilt. I showed him the pattern and he had very specific ideas on how everything should look-even down to wanting real planet material not cartoon planets. It even had to be a USA rocket ship with flag fabric to make it official. He got the most fun out of picking out his quilt.
I think that’s a great idea for Gannon. If you had some plaid shirts in cat colors, I think you’d have a great guy’s quilt.
That’s what I was thinking too…shirts! Boyish and cozy!
Cute idea! I often wonder what happened to Carrie Nelson! I too loved her quilts.
What a cool quilt. How about using your shirting fabrics? I’m sure you have lots of blues that would look great, and maybe some oranges for the alternate blocks.
Black, white, tan, with a touch of orange for the kitties, and John Deere fabric for the other blocks?
What about using real cat colors and make the chain with your plaid shirts, It would look like a boy!
It’s all about the colors and the variety of colors. Why not let him help with color choices? He can pick out the scraps to use. Could be fun. He might be so into cats that he has ideas about what colors of fur they should have.
Any thoughts about Patriotic color scheme for our Country’s 250 birthday ?? It could have camo colors for the backing and pay homage to his Army interest, cats for the Cat King, with Patriotic colors for 250…..
Could always change the chain to a dark blue, black or brown. As for cat colours, I’d also ask Gannon. My daughter chose her fabrics – broke the bank of mum and dad, but luckily fat quarters were less expensive in those days! LOL!
I’d go rogue with a mid-brown background, white/black/orange/grey cats and large squares in plaid or small prints, read as solid teal/aqua chain.
I’m thinking of a blue, tan or light grey background.
Calico cat colors would be a great pallet to work with. What a fun project and for someone you love!
well Jo you can take a busy quilt with colors that make me think I would never make that quilt. ( bonnie’s Geese on a String) and change the colors to really cute so I know you can do that for this one.
Janice
Thanks for the vote of confidence.
I love this quilt and so will Gannon. I would make all the cats first in the colors you want with a light tan/cream background. Once you lay them all on the design floor, I’m betting that the other block/colors will shout out what they are.
I can’t wait to see it! Happy Friday Jo.
I like the idea of Gannon picking cat colors and using shirt pieces for the blocks and lattice, or your scraps.
I have found chambray shirts work great as background fabric for a boy’s/men’s quilt – especially when they are coupled with plaids. Wonder if Gannon would like something like that.
What are boy colors? I see those diagonal lines in cobalt blues, with the cats in your suggested tuxedo colors. But, I know a young man who would love it in greens and oranges (tabby cats). Why not go with Gannon’s favorite colors?
I actually don’t find this quilt particularly girlie at all. I think he’d love it no matter what colors are used but make sure you do a lettered border with the words Cat King
love cats [i have 2] but unfortunately i cannot eat a whole one
