So Rick and Karl really wanted to go to The Odyssey movie. I was okay to go. I like mythology, okay, but…those two love it.
I had seen the previews and thought it looked good. I was definitely game to go. In all honesty, I’d go whenever someone wants to go to the movies. I enjoy movies.
We had plans to go one day, but Karl had to stay late for work. We ended up making plans for another day. That was Monday night.
Sadly, I forgot to snap a picture of us. I was too engrossed in the popcorn. HA!! They were great at the theatre. We had asked for an extra lid for our popcorn. When ordering a large, we’re given a large bottom with a domed lid that another person can put popcorn in. That way, two people can eat from the same bucket without having to share the actual bucket. Rick and Karl both wanted extra salt. I Karl asked for another lid. We were just going to dump the bucket into the lids and then they could put extra salt on it.
The concession workers gave me the full bucket, then filled two lids. We didn’t have to pour any of my popcorn into their lids. Off-da. We had a lot of popcorn!!

The show follows The Odyssey written by Homer. As a student, I remember reading this. I wasn’t a huge fan and didn’t see the lore.

Rick loved the show. He’s sure there will be Oscar nominations for the show. Karl felt the same. Both of them would love to see it again. Both can’t wait until it comes to home screens so they can watch it again.
Me… yes, the scenes are big and dynamic…but the story is still just the same story…Medusa, the Cyclops…all the same and still just as weird for me. I kind of feel like they spent lots of money to tell a crappy story.
Okay…you can all boo me now. I’m sure I have the unpopular opinion. Let me know. What did those of you who saw the movie think?
No “Boos” from me – you’re allowed to like or dislike these things! This one isn’t on my radar to see, in fact I don’t know anyone who saw it yet…

It was probably worth it for the popcorn, but this movie would not be my choice either. I just really don’t like those types of movies, give me a good romcom anytime!!!
This isn’t the kind of movie that I would go to, not even for the pop corn! I’m glad the guys liked it though and I’m sure it was fun to be with Rick and Karl.
I LOVE movie theater popcorn! I probably would not go to see this movie. Mythology was not one of my better classes in high school. You are allowed your opinions and no one should boo you. Especially not on your blog!
I am not fond of mythology either.
I’m not fond of mythology but went with my son because he asked me to. I thought it was the most boring movie I have EVER seen. Nothing about it was even remotely entertaining, I give it a 1 out of 10.
My son & I saw it together too. We both enjoyed it but weren’t blown away. I think Christopher Nolan could use a better screenwriter, rather than writing the script himself. I thought the dialogue was pretty flat. The movie magic only really kicked in for me in the last 30 minutes or so. A little disappointing, overall.
My sister saw this movie. It wasn’t her cup of tea either. Her girlfriend had read the book and told her that the movie took liberties.
I saw it & agree with Karl that it will get a lot of awards. I also agree with you, it was just ok. I knew when I started to get fidgety at hour one
I must have slept through school because I don’t remember even a mention of it. It didn’t sound like my kind of movie, or a book that I would read.
My brother went and his opinion was about the same as yours but he too enjoyed the popcorn. Think I’llpass on this one.
I was on a different track in High School -we read things by Jacques Cousteau, etc. So luckily I missed all these – it was enough to read Shakespeare. This isn’t a genre I would be interested in. Like someone said -give me a romcom, or a history based movie
I didn’t go see it. Just not my kind of movie. I like comedies or rom-coms, feel-good movies. I did want to see Toy Story 5, but didn’t make it to the theater. Guess I’ll wait until it’s out on stream or DVD from the library. Been watching a lot of teen dramas on Amazon lately lol.
I went to see Spider Man with my grandson! I like the other ones I’ve seen but this had too much of everything! I wasn’t wild about it. I won’t be going to see the Odyssey! Hugs,
Back in the days of artistic creativity have admired the work of the stop motion model animator Ray Harryhausen. One of 1981’s remarkable productions was “Clash of the Titans”. So probably will not be watching this Odyssey. His work also includes:

I guess I’m in agreement with everyone else. No interest in The Odyssey but I do agree with Li about the Harryhausen movies. Such talent!
Considering how expensive movies are these days, dh and I pick out movies we REALLY want to see, ;-)
Love and prayers
I saw it with my nephew for his birthday present. I thought Matt Damon did a good job. Liberties? Yes, well, it’s a movie. I wasn’t crazy about the handling of Scylla and Charybdis, but I loved the Trojan Horse. That was a story my grandmother taught me in infancy. Its humanity really came to life for me here. I loved that the horse was half buried in the sand and the way they tugged it into the city. I can see the epic betrayal of a peace offering, a gift accepted that contains chaos and decimation of a civilization. Daddy taught me that a man is only as good as his word. How do we measure Odysseus, whose epic strength is cleverness at deception? Odysseus has penance to pay for that Horse, so his journey home is torturous. Mythology reduces to moral lessons, stories to teach us that our actions have consequences so we must be kind and thoughtful and keep our word.
Overall, I liked the film. I won’t see it again, but it wasn’t a waste of time or money, and I filled up on birthday dinner just before so I didn’t have any popcorn.
We seldom go to movies and when we do it’s usually a movie my daughter wants to see. Our fourth grade teacher read the Odyssey to us and taught us about Greek mythology, so I’d probably watch it if I came across it on DVD or Prime.
My grandma used to say “to each his own,” as we all have different tastes. I personally dislike romantic comedies but give me an action or thriller movie and I’m game.
I have not seen it and probably won’t. My Greek friend went to it and hated it. I would trust his opinion first so it’s not worth it for me. I am glad you got out and saw the movie anyway. Time with family is the best no matter what you are doing.
I chose to watch my two grandsons while my son and DIL went to watch it. They enjoyed it. It’s not my cup of tea either. Greek mythology does nothing for me.
My husband and I are with you 100%. We left after the first hour. The only other movie we’ve ever walked out of was The Trouble With Mary. Guess we’re just not in the know.
Jo, I read both the Iliad and the Odyssey in my senior year of college. It was a course on Greek life. I loved the Iliad but the Odyssey left me cold. It just seemed to go on and on. If I see the movie it will be when it is available for home screens. We just don’t go to movies any more. I applaud your joy in movie going. I felt that way once long ago! Take care.
I don’t mind mythology and think it can be a great basis for action and adventure movies (2004’s Troy with Brad Pitt is great!). I read the Odyssey in school and it’s a fine base to build a good script off of if the screen writer is good. But regardless of that, I just really don’t like Matt Damon. Also, I’m just not happy that another Homer epic film omitted Cassandra (who is a feminist icon). So, I will probably never see this. Thank you for confirming for me Jo!
My daughter and grandson saw it and both said they would like to see it again. I did not have to read the Odyssey in school and I am not into mythology. I will not be seeing this movie
Personally yes your stance is unpopular yet everyone has their personal taste in books and movies. I enjoyed both the book and an older version of the book into movie. I enjoy mythology, though, so there is that as well.
No mythology for me – but I’m all for the theater popcorn!
