Ask Jo: June 30th, 2026

Every so often, questions and comments come from readers, and I think others would like to hear my response.  That’s when I feature them on the
 blog
.  This is one of those days.

After seeing this picture a blog reader recently asked, “It looks like you are sewing the binding down with the machine. Do you have a video of that? I’d love to see how you do it.“

I do have a video showing how I bind quilts. I do everything by machine. You can find it HERE. Or you can watch the video by pushing the play button below.

Lynn asked, “What is a tube ruler?” That was after THIS blog post showing a community quilt finish.

I suggested it was likely done with a Tube Ruler.

This is what the ruler looks like. You can find it HERE on Amazon. After looking more carefully, I can see that the maker did not use a Strip Tube Ruler. A very similar quilt could be made with the strip ruler.

If you’d like to learn how to use it, you can search YouTube by typing “strip ruler” into the search bar.

I thought I would share with you an update to my Chicken Fried Chicken recipe post. You can find that recipe HERE. This is how it looked…YUM.

Rick and I both aren’t huge fans of leftovers. At least not leftovers that last more than two days. So, rather than present the chicken the same way at the next meal, I took the fried chicken pieces and put them in the air fryer.

I forgot to take a picture. Anyway…once warmed in the air fryer we put them in a bun, added tomato, lettuce, and mayo, and had an awesome chicken sandwich with tator tots. It was a really fast meal. Rick and both loved it and said we wanted to eat that again.

I told you that the quilt I talked about in the photos above and how I would be donating the quilt to this benefit. Louise asked, “Jo, if there is a way to donate cash directly to help this family, can you please send a link? My niece also suffered from this terrible form of cancer, and I’d like to help. Thanks.”

It’s for a farmer who lives a few miles out of town. He ended up with Neuroendocrine Carcinoma (cancer) and is now paralyzed from the waist down. They are a great family with three grown kids. Kalissa graduated with their oldest. I’ve been on the church council with Dann. He is a very giving guy.

A great group of local women are putting it together. The committee is now accepting donations for the silent and live auction! Send a message to the church Facebook group or to Jeanne Rochford, Rhonda Stange, Kim Conrad,, Marlene Klemp, Charlene Harper, Mary Langreck or Dawn Zmoos if you have something you would be interested in contributing. Thanks!

You can send any donations to me, and I will get them to the committee. If you’re local, you can contact anyone listed.

Thanks so much for considering a donation.

That wraps up this round of Ask Jo. You can find previous Ask Jo posts by typing “ask Jo” in the search bar. If you have a question, the quickest way to get to me is by leaving a comment.

  1. I asked but never saw a response to: didn’t you do Blackbird Designs Anniversaries of the Heart series, all on different pieces of fabric, then sew them together? Any tips on matching them to line up when putting together? I’m on the third one and am doing that. Thanks!

  2. Thank you for sharing your answers to these questions. I especially liked the one about a tube ruler. I probably had heard about that before but forgot what it was.

Hi Jo, I have a question. Can you share again where you got the glasses you use for cross stitching? When I had my eyes examined last year, I asked the doctor about getting bifocals with lower just glass and the upper for distance. He kept telling me it wouldn’t work. I take my left contact (for near vision) out a lot for stitching now. I can see much better than with the bifocals he gave me.
    Thanks, Susan

  4. Jo, I watched the machine binding video and it was very helpful. When I do binding, I join the ends as you showed but with a couple of changes. I leave longer tails for the joining and I pin a pleat in the quilt before I sew the two tails together to give myself a little wiggle room. Love your blog and all the interesting things you write about.
