If you’ve been a long-time reader here, you know that links from my site to Amazon, earn a commission for me. For example, if I put a link on the blog to Lori Holt’s Seams So Easy Guide…this one…that I completely adore, and you click the link and buy it, Amazon gives me a 45 cent commission on the sale. I’ve explained that before. If you’re on Amazon and end up buying a present for your granddaughter’s birthday while you’re there, they give me a commission on that as well.
Amazon then gives me a listing of the items people bought. I have not idea who bought what. No names are listed. No addresses are listed. I just get a list of what was bought.
Well, I often curiously look at the lists to see what other people end up buying besides the item I put a link to. Sometimes I am so intrigued by them I end up buying them. Today I’m going to show you two things that blog readers enticed me into buying…
First up:
A battery-operated can opener. As I age, I’m having a tougher time using items that require hand strength. I can’t get a lid open to save my soul. When I saw this can opener that was battery-operated and small, I decided to give it a try.
I clipped it on the can like this…
Pushed the button…and …the can opened just like that. I called Carver over when I opened another can. Just look how curious he was…
He moved from side to side. He couldn’t get close enough to check it out.
I was smiling just watching him.
He thought it was pretty cool.

The next thing a blog reader inadvertently got me to but was this…a belt. It’s actually a bucket-free belt.
You can see in the picture below how it works. The belt clips onto one belt loop goes around and clips on the other belt loop. It’s totally adjustable.
I am in love. It’s not cute. It’s not glamorous. It’s not for people who tuck their shirts in. But it works perfectly for me.
I have chicken legs and no butt. I carry all of my weight in my belly. My pants always are sliding off of me. So I always need a belt. But, I hate the way belts add more to my already big waist. When I have childcare I have a minute (maybe) to use the restroom as the kids are alone while I’m gone. This was I don’t have to mess with the belt. It stays in place. I just worry about my button and fly. I don’t have to unbuckle the belt. It is slick. I love it.

I have the exact same can opener and it’s great! Just don’t forget the batteries!
This can opener works great UNTIL the batteries die while opening a can. So you might want to replace the batteries on a regular basis.

When you find a glass jar opener, please post it! It gets harder and harder to grip the wide mouth jars and wrestle them open. I bang on the lids with a knife handle, use the rubber grippers, knock them on the counter. I know one day I will break the jar and the dang lid will still be hanging on!
Juis, try putting the tip of your vegetable peeler (the non-y type) under the edge of the lid and gently push down on the peeler until you hear the seal break. I’ve been doing this lately and have opened jars that even my husband couldn’t open.
I do this too, but use a teaspoon! Works like a charm.
I have one that is also a can opener.
Use a bottle opener to release the pressure so the jar will open easy.
Juls, holding onto the bottom of the jar, turning it over and firmly tapping the lid on the floor two or three times works pretty well. You still have to grip and twist the lid, but the tapping broke the seal already so it is a bit easier.
I would be more than happy to give you the commission from all my Amazon purchases but when I went to look at the belt, the link didn’t work. So I thought maybe it was just that link, so I tried the seam guide. That link didn’t work as well. Look and see what is wrong and I’ll try again tomorrow. Thanks.

Those links don’t work either. Says Amazon refuses to connect. It is a grey box with a little white square in the middle.
Jo – I subscribe to your blog through Bloglovin’. I find the links do not work when I am reading on Bloglovin’ but work fine when I go directly to your website. I have noticed this often with Bloglovin’ – links for a lot of blogs do not work unless you go directly to the blogger’s website.

I read through Bloglovin’, too. If I hold down the CTRL key and click on the link at the same time, it will open in a new window.
Today the link works. Yesterday it didn’t. Weird.
A good friend of mine gave me that battery operated opener along with the opener to loosen lids. I’m really enjoying both products. Now I don’t have to go across the street to have my neighbor open the lids for me. I’m thinking I enjoy the lid opener more than the can opener but I love them both. So very easy to use.
When I had my index finger joint replaced my hand physical therapist told me about the can opener. It was called a tornado back then. I have two of them now and can’t imagine opening a can any other way. I also like no sharp edges.
I have only watched Rachel Rays tv show one time. That one time, she showed a trick to open a jar and it works for me every time. Turn jar upside down and wack it on the counter. Just smack the lid flat on the counter hard. I was often afraid of breaking the jar, but never have.
Agree with Sally. I have turned the jar upside down and bang it on the counter. Works every time.
I’m going to check out that can opener. I bought the Lori holt guide but I cut out the area so I don’t think it’ll work well now. Bummer!

Not having any problems using a manual can opener yet, but I second the request to find a good jar opener for glass jars. Even my hubby is having trouble with some of them these days. We’ll try the tip to bang the jar on the counter and hope it doesn’t break!
Someone had installed one of these under the cupboard in our last house. I had to use two hands to hold the jar flat in the V but it worked. If the link doesn’t work, it’s called The Grip Jar Opener.

Oh my, thank you so much for these two suggestions. I, too, am having trouble turning the handle on the can opener. The battery-operated one sounds great. More than that though, thank you so much for the belt find!!! I’ve looked for years for an easy to use belt for my developmentally disabled brother. He has no backside to hold up his pants so we are constantly telling him to pull them up. I even resorted to buying elastic and buckles at Hobby Lobby and making them but it is a struggle to make them snug enough to hold up his pants but easy enough to fasten the buckle. I’ll be ordering several. Thanks again!!!!

I have used a piece of 1” elastic as a belt and on the ends put the clips that are used inside a suitcase to hold the clothes down before zipping the case. Your brother might be able to use this type of clip if you can’t get the belt Jo shows.

There are some very good can openers for jars out there if anyone is interested. Must be well over a decade ago I purchased one like the ones Pampered Chef has listed for $15 and am still using it and loving it today. They are “V” shaped with a handle. Also purchased a similar “V” shaped one without a handle to be mounted under a cabinet. Hope this helps someone.

I have arthritis in my hands and can’t open jars. I got a jar opener from QVC a long time ago that has a crank on top to tighten to the jar and a long handle that sticks out to turn to open the jar. You just hang onto the jar and turn the long handle. It goes small enough to open small lids too. I had one of those can openers. That was a good tip to change the batteries. When the batteries die in mid opening you can’t get it off the can. I will order the belt though. I have the same body style.
