Adventures in Thrifting

I was thrifting…

I was happy when the thrift store turned over to fall clothing.  Although I’m not hunting for men’s 100% cotton shirts, I do still take a look because I’m not-not hunting either.  I happen to find this orange one.  I’m a cheap skate and won’t pay more than $2 for a shirt so when I find one in a hard to find color, I snap it up!

If you’re a long time reader you know I’ve been collecting shirts for Bonnie Hunter’s Oregon or Bust quilt only I’m doing in blues and oranges only.  So although I don’t have immediate plans to make the quilt..it is on the list.  The quilt is one I think I’ll keep for myself so…it gets set aside…and waits until other deadline quilts and gifted quilts get finished first.

I found fabric again…this time there wasn’t a lot.  Mostly things I didn’t need but ended up buying as I will pass them along to the Cresco quilting ladies.

See the Christmas fabric on the far left…more of them have 1 1/2 to 2 yards and were only 50 cents each.  The ones on the right were 50 cents each too.  All of this I’ll put in the box for the Cresco ladies.

These were 1/4 yard cuts.  It was 25 cents all together.

These I pulled for me…The red is a flannel..the black a calico for my collection and the strawberry fabric is enough for a baby quilt backing.

This one I was excited about…a white based neutral.  $1.  There was about 2 yards there.  I’ve already cut from this and started using it.

I picked up this duvet cover too.  They work so good for backing a quilt.  I’ll hang on to this for now but next time I have a package going Ronda’s way, I’ll likely throw it in.  I know she likes using them too.

My best find of the day…A huge dinosaur book.  It was 50 cents.  I have a dinosaur lover in my bunch.  He reminds me of Karl when he was that age.  Karl loved dinos too.  On Veteran’s Day it was a no school day.  He came at 7:30 in the morning and looked at it until 9am.  He picked it up several more times during the day.  I ended up spending LOTS of time pronouncing those dinosaur names.  This one have me stumped.

In between looking at the book, he got out dinosaur stickers along with some paper and made a dino scene.  The stickers were from a blog reader.  You helped make this guy have a happy day.  Watching him reminded me why I love thrift stores…at thrift stores, 50 cents can make a day!  I ended up sending the book home with him.  He was tickled.  I don’t know if mom and dad will be after they spent the evening pronouncing dino names!!

Here’s a thrifting funny.  One of my childcare moms is crazy about thrift stores like I am.  Like me, she purposely visits town with thrift stores.  She stops every chance she gets.  Well she was reading the blog and saw that I buy fabric at the stores.  She started picking up fabric for me and was going to gift it to me.  What a sweetie.  (She knows me too well)

Here’s 4 yards of muslin.  PERFECT!!

…and all these baggies of 4 1/2″ squares.
She’s the sweetest to me and I so appreciate it.

She laughed when she gave the goodies to me.  She said, “I drove the ladies in the store crazy.  I kept asking them it this was good quilting fabric”.  HA!!

So that’s my latest additions of fabric…and adventures from the thrift store!
