A New Quilt Finishing Group…

Hello friends…I have wonderful news to share. I was contacted by a lady named Janis. She quilts with a group of ladies…I’m just going to call them Janis and Company. Here is what she wrote:

I’m reaching out to see if we could get on your list for donated quilts. There are 6 of us volunteers that teach sewing at a facility for abused and addicted women every Tuesday afternoon. We have been involved with this program for 15 years. Our oldest volunteer is 93 and still going strong!

Our projects include purses, pillows, pillow cases, aprons, etc. All the items we use — machines, scissors, pins, rotary cutters — are donated. The majority of fabric comes from attics as people pass away.

We take all the scraps after cutting out the projects and make simple quilts measuring 38”x 60”. We cannot piece quilts quickly enough for the ladies to finish. We lay the top, batting and backing together (right sides together) they sew around, do some quilting lines and leave our session with a lap quilt. They are very proud of all their completed projects.

Keeping my fingers crossed that we are able to get on your list for donated quilt tops. The scrappier, the better!

Thank you for your consideration of helping us out.

I immediately said yes…I’m a firm believer that it is good to help but even better to teach. I’m happy to see this is a teaching group!!

I asked Janis about sending some pictures as you all love seeing pictures and more readily support groups that we can see what they are doing. This is what she wrote back:

We are not allowed to take any pictures while we are there. Mainly because of the facility’s domestic violence clients. They are very strict about this policy. The ladies are NEVER allowed to use their phones during our sessions. The home supplies us with polyfil for any stuffed projects. They also buy our quilt batting. We are grateful for these items because we go through them like crazy. The women make plenty of baby items like bibs, burp cloths and baby bopper pillows for nursing moms. The facility has a nursery and a preschool. The size of the quilts could actually be 40” wide.

Here are some of the tops they have made in the past.

I’m hoping you might consider checking out your stash of quilt tops, or fabric, and consider sending some to Janis. It would really help their worthy cause.

If you have a orphan blocks, I’m guessing the ladies would happily take them and make them into a top as well. I know we all love to help out worthy causes and this definitely looks like one. If you have a baby quilt, I’m sure they would be interested in that as they could always add fabric to the top and bottom.

Here is Janis email address: jeepsterjan@gmail.com I will also be adding Janis’ info to the donation page. Thank you for your help!!

  1. Thank you for sharing this! I would love to donate fabric/sewing room items I no longer need. I will message her

  2. Sounds like this is a good group to help with tops and/or fabric. I, too, like it that they are teaching a skill to these women.

  3. Is there a way to know where the different groups are located? Not super specific but maybe their state or nearby city and state? I would much rather deliver supplies or tops to someone. As opposed to mailing. And because we have had issues shipping things. I would be happy to offer personal references if any person or group is near me. I want everyone to feel safe.
