A Medical Week…

I told you in an earlier post that I had four doctor appointments last week. Thank goodness I don’t have a regular job. I’d never be able to do it. No place would ever allow me enough time to go to all of my appointments.

Well…Thursday was an easy appointment. I had to have an echocardiogram. You might remember that I had to have one last year before my back surgery. Well, now I guess I am on a schedule to have one every year. I guess it’s for the best.

Friday I had a Zometta infusion. It is supposed to take the calcium out of my blood and put it in my bones. The nurse kind of missed on me. This picture was taken the next day.

After hearing from a friend of ours, I’m wondering if I really want to keep getting the infusions. She ended up losing all of her teeth because of Zometta. UGH. I hate knowing stuff like this and having to make a decision. Are any of you doing Zometta infusions, and have you had teeth problems because of it?

On top of all of the appointments, Rick and I have been sick all of last week…and it’s creeping into this week. Terrible stomach cramps with very frequent fast runs to the toilet, along with an overall ache and soreness, are the main symptoms. It’s a daytime AND a nighttime thing. It’s so hard…I’ll wake up okay and an hour later be back at it. We were able to sneak up to Rochester and get Rick the clothes he needed for class, but that was about it. We actually thought it was over on Friday. Both of us felt really good. It was a lie. We woke up the next day, and I was the worst I’ve ever been.

Rick waited on me much of the day, and I even took a nap.

Rick was okay on Sunday and went golfing. He came home, and about three hours later he felt like he was hit by a bus.

We’ve tried not eating. We’ve tried only toast. Nothing changes it.

We think I was especially hit hard on me on Saturday because I had the infusion the day before…and the infusion can kind of mess with me.

So…we are patiently waiting for this all to go away. We’re pretty sure Kelli gave it to us. She had it and said it lasted about a week. Pam, a friend of mine, said she and her husband had it and it lasted two weeks. UGH. All I know is that I’m one and a half weeks in, and it’s not done yet. AHH.

Rick had a regular doctor appointment on Monday. He asked his doctor about it. Apparently, it’s a bug going around, and it’s typically lasting two weeks. Oh joy.

  1. Did you both take a COVID-19 test? I ask because a friend with similar symptoms took the test and she was positive…Just a thought.

  2. Hopefully y’all didn’t eat any of the contaminated iceberg lettuce. It causes those same symptoms. Feel better soon!

  3. I never did infusions but i had trouble eith calcium levels after 2 para thyroid removed. I took tums for calcium and calcitoral [prescription vit D] to absorb it.

  4. Jo, I highly recommend you talk to your doctor before you decide to stop the infusions. Doctors know the risks of medications and weigh the benefits accordingly. Yes, teeth issues are a possible side effect of this drug but it does not mean you will have it. I believe it is a rare side effect. The potential gain from this medication with all of your bone issues and cancer are the reason you are being given the infusions. Doctors not take this lightly. I take Reclast which is the same active ingredient just different dosages and reasons. I too was afraid of it because of teeth and jaw problems but a discussion with my doctor about those fears made me believe that the benefits outweigh the possibible side effects. Having your bones disintegrate is very serious. Just think about having a heart to heart about your fears with your doctor before deciding not to do them.

  5. You asked for it thoughts, so here’s mine. I am about your age and at risk for osteoporosis. I take a calcium hydroxyapatite supplement and a vitamin K2-D3 supplement. That form of calcium is more easily absorbed and the vitamins make sure the calcium goes where I want it to. As to the stomach bug…. can’t beat oregano oil to help heal you up!

  6. My first thought was the [elusive!] cyclosporiasis outbreak, which can last weeks/months, and needs to be treated with an antibiotic.

    1. Susan from Michigan

My thought too. My sister had that, unofficially, and it lasted a month. She had bloating and gas in addition.

  7. I had a nasty night of potty runs a few weeks ago. We were visiting family. I asked my sister-in -law for help, she’s a nurse. She gave me 8 charcoal capsules and a bottle of ginger ale. Her recommendation was 8 to 10 charcoal capsules every 4 hours and a sip of ginger ale as needed. 3 doses and I felt much better, the next day I was all good. Don’t take the charcoal within 4 hours of medicines, it can absorb those too. Feel better soon!

  8. Jo this is not going away by itself. Please look to a doctor to rule out the parasite cyclosporiasis. If an antibiotic is necessary you need to see a doctor anyway. I understand the symptoms can initially take a couple of weeks to present themselves.

  9. WOW sitting here after having my RECLAST infusion for bone loss this afternoon. I also have some jawbone loss. GREAT HUH. I think I had that loss before the dexascan showed it… BC I have had severe gum disease in the past too. Hope you get better from from your gastro issues.
