A Day With Anders

Today was an Anders day. I still take care of him 2-3 times a week. I treasure my time with him.

Anders is doing well, but speech is a bit of a glitch for him. He talks…and talks a lot, but he has some sounds that need a little work. Our family can understand him the majority of the time…but others would have more difficulty. In light of that, Kalissa asked for him to attend speech therapy.

Today was my day to take him. After he was done, we went to the farm store. I was out of Finch bird seed. It was the perfect day to go.

They had baby chicks…

…and popcorn. It was the perfect cost-zero-dollar things I could do with him.

Once we got home, we filled the bird feeders.

In the middle of feeding the birds, Anders said, “Grandma Jo, you have cat?” No. No I don’t have a cat. He was looking down into my egressed window.

I thought I’d better go see…oh wait. I can see something glowing in the window well.

I took my camera and zoomed in. Just about then Anders said, “Kittens”. What???

Shoot. It looks like I do have a cat and kittens. UGH. I don’t want/need a cat with kittens.

There they were, down in the bottom of the egressed window well. How was the momma getting food and water? How was she going to carry them out of there?

I have no business trying to climb down there. Oh no!

So I messaged the kids. Kalissa volunteered to help me when she came and picked up Anders.

I have no idea how many kittens. I’m guessing three or four. I’ve come up with an idea of how to keep them until they can be spayed, neutered, and adopted. All I know is that they will get fixed!

I also don’t know if she is tame. I kind of think she’s okay because when Anders and I looked down at her, she kind of turned on her back and showed her tummy like she wanted a belly rub.

Right up to naptime, Anders would keep asking if he could go see the kittens. I let him go outside by himself and check them. He was so cute.

While he was sleeping my first finches started showing up…

As I write this, he’s still sleeping. I can’t wait for him to wake up and see the birds.

I have to admit…I’m a little excited about the cat and kittens. I’m anxious to see how it will all turn out. I’ll take some pictures and keep you posted. All I can say is, it is never dull around here.

What a fun day for both Anders and me!!

  1. My brother Tom had speech therapy in Grade 2 and when I was in my late 20’s one of my friends said that to her ear my whole family- 6 of us – all mumbled except for Tom. I laughed and laughed

  2. Oh kittens!!!!
I have always had cats (my husband said it was the SPCA at our house)
Living in the country we had dogs, horses, sheep, cows, chickens, pigs etc.
Anything that came our way and needed help.
Of course the kids raised a lot for 4 H/FFA.
Glad you will get mama cat fixed or it will be population explosion.
Any mice, mama cat will help with that.
Cats are special and can sense when you have a problem.
Well your grandchildren will love this experience.
It’s a good teaching experience for them.
Take care and take care of those kittens and mama. hahaha

  3. It sounds like a good day with Anders. How fun that he found the cat and kittens! Were you able to get them out easily, maybe through the window. I hope the cat was tame. Kittens are so cute, but I am not one for cats in my house, although both daughters had a cat when they were growing up.

  4. Your new mama cat looks far too healthy to be feral or to have been homeless for long. Hopefully you can get the mama & babies the care and immunizations they need on time. The life of stray cat babies is often cruel and short. Good for you for being committed to spay and neuter! And congrats on the pretty fluffy new cat! I’ve always said. Cats find us! Or she found Anders ;)

  5. There’s always something, right? :-D I guess you’ve been chosen by the cat distribution system. Thank you for taking care of them.
Glad you and Anders had such a wonderful day!
    Love and prayers

  6. Such a heartwarming day! Speech therapy does wonders…my grandson had delayed speech. Getting him into speech therapy obviously increased his ability to communicate but also eliminated his frustration in getting his messages across to others outside of his family. And those kitties…well, mom knew a good place to start her family…knew you would help her out!

  7. Like Donna said, you were chosen by the cat distribution system. :-) I saw a monk on Facebook who says that cats appear when you need help with something in your life – the two who adopted us were teachers for sure. The first one appeared the weekend my nest was emptied as our daughter left for college 300 miles away. Not too long after, the second one adopted my DH; followed him around like a puppy! As for Anders’ speech problem, I agree with Susan – speech therapy works wonders. My son had trouble making the “L” sound – he was scared of “yions”. Many reps of “lovely lions licking lolly pops” eventually cured him!

  8. I welcome trips to the farms store and when you add in baby chicks and free popcorn, it’s a magical fun day for sure. Lucky Anders, and then to find baby kittens at G-ma Jos home, a home run kinda day. Lucky Anders.

  9. The cat you were “distributed” looks like Bonnie Hunter’s Hazel Grey. I hope the kittens grow up healthy and they find good homes. I just got a new shelter kitty last week. She is being shy but I will have to get her used to her new home.

  10. I always enjoy seeing my grandson too! I pick him up from school about twice a week and we just spend time together! I’m 75 and he’s 9 now and I want to leave lots of memories with him so he knows how much I love him when I’m gone. Hugs,

  11. Sounds like a great day with Anders.
Regarding the cat, perhaps check around with some neighbors to see if anyone is missing or knows of a cat matching her description. Maybe they didn’t even know she was pregnant—she looks very fluffy.
I’ve had cats my whole life (as well as numerous dogs) so I thank you for looking out for this momma! She landed at the right place. :)
