A Children’s Author I Love: Clare Beaton

I know many of you who read the blog are crafty.  I’m guessing you’re quilters, knitters, crocheters, cross-stitchers, or similar hobbies…but if you don’t, I’m sure you must appreciate them.  In light of that, I thought I would introduce you to an author/illustrator that I am in love with.  Her name is Clare Beaton.  She works to make children’s picture books..and her work is amazing.

I have many of her books in my collection.

I have Zoe and her Zebra

How Big is Pig?

One Moose, Twenty Mice.

The first book I ever purchase by her was There’s a Cow in the Cabbage Patch.  I don’t know if this one is in print anymore.

Paperback There's a Cow in the Cabbage Patch Book
Recently when I was at the thrift store I found another of her books that… I also don’t think is in print.  It is Daisy Gets Dressed.
Many of the books are interactive.  For example in the photo below the little girl is getting dressed.  The kids need to find her mini skirt and all the other things that are wavy in the page layout.

My kids just love these type of books…

This particular book is great as it introduces kids to different describing words…in this layout the word is checkered.

What I love the most…ALL of the illustrations are done in felt applique.  Isn’t it wonderful?

I think it would be so fun to trace an illustration and stitch it on something that is the kids’.  For example wouldn’t it be cute to trace the little Scotty dog and stitch him onto a jean jumper for a granddaughter?  I think it would be so cute!!

All of her books are so interesting to me.  While the kids are enjoying the time together while we read, I’m also enjoying the amazing stitched artwork illustrations.

I think it’s so important that we share our crafts and interests with the little ones in our lives.  These books are a great way to show kids that others are crafty too.

If you are looking for her books, Amazon has a few of her books (HERE is a link to her author page) but not all of them.  You might have to find the Daisy Gets Dressed books on the used market or at your local library.

  1. Oh yes! I have Mother Goose Remembers. I love it ! Gave it to my sister as well. It is a joy every time I read it.

  2. What a great author. Thanks for the recommendation. I like your idea of tracing one of the things for an appliqued shirt. I’ll have to see if I can find her books.

  3. Jo, I really appreciate it when you share the children’s toys that you get for childcare or your grandkids. There are times that I need a child’s gift and you are my go-to for ideas. A few months back I needed a gift for a your boy and I was able to purchase those cute trucks that you got. I loved seeing how you made a rock play box for them out of the serving tray. The young man loves them, they are age aproved and fit his hands nicely. This author will be added to my “idea” file, I love giving kids books.
