A Feel Good Story from Suzanne and the Cresco Ladies

Today I have a new volunteer to tell you about,  Suzanne…

A bit ago Suzanne contacted me and said she would be interested in helping bind quilts if I had any.  SERENDIPITY!!  I did.

The Cresco Ladies occasionally bring me quilts that need binding.  I like to help out if I can and actually ask them if I can help.  They had just brought me some so I passed two to Suzanne.

She ended up finishing them.  Here they are…

Suzanne sent a note along with the picture. She writes:
“Earlier you had sent me 2 quilts to bind and give to someone who would appreciate it. I quickly completed binding but kept waiting for them to tell me where they wanted to go.

As I am sure you are aware, there has been devastating flooding in Eastern KY.  I live in Central KY. 

The Jessamine County school system adopted Knott County to help the residents.  As a retired teacher of Jessamine County,  I was proud to see the school district helping our county reach out to help.

Knott County has major damage. Many, many people have no homes. However, FEMA mobile homes are arriving to provide housing.

The two quilts you sent me from the Cresco Ladies started talking to me. They said they wanted to go to 2 of those families. The quilts promised to love the folks who received them.

I told the folks at the school buses that were collecting donations that these quilts are ready to give comfort to someone.  I hope they go to quilters. 

This isn’t a great picture but I wanted the Cresco ladies to see they are proving much-needed comfort for 2 families.

I also wanted to share that I purchased requested items to send on the school buses (underwear, can openers, bug spray, canned food, mops,  socks, etc).  When I reached the cashier I had about $120 of items. I shared with her that the items were going to Eastern KY. She said she was going to price them at 50%. What a blessing!

Pictured here are two of the school bus drivers who have been loading the buses and will be driving the items to Knott  County on Thursday. 

Thank you so much for providing me the opportunity to send these 2 quilts to 2 families.”

I ended up talking with the Cresco Ladies and with Suzanne.  The Ladies were happy to help and together we’ve sent even more quilts to Suzanne.

Quilt Finish: Gray Half Square Triangle Quilts

You might remember that I’m trying to get real with my UFOs.  I am on a push to get 6 finished by the first of July.  That would be half of the UFOs I have if I could do it.  That would be awesome. It’s not that I’m against UFOs.  I just want some space back in my sewing room.  Eliminating the totes would give me more space!

So today’s finish started back in January of 2020….
A blog reader gave me a bunch of bonus triangles.  They were a bright printed fabric with a gray background.  I played around with them and ended up coming up with this block.  I was SUPER lucky that I was able to match the gray she had used with a gray that I had in my stash.


I loved the block.  It used up a ton of scraps…but then the projects stalled out.  I couldn’t come up with a layout that I loved.  Another problem…I only had 42 blocks.  It was an odd number…not enough for a bed quilt…too many for a baby quilt.  I know I could make a lap quilt but honestly, I’m not into lap quilts.  We’re all tall big people at my house and for us, we love a twin-sized quilt as a lap quilt.

So it continued to stall.

Then I got all excited about finishing my UFO projects and being these were already in blocks, it would be quicker to finish than some of my other projects…so…I made two baby quilts.  These are on the big size for baby quilts.  I really make more of a toddler quilt.  It’s not recommended that babies sleep with quilts until they are over the age of one so…I like to make bigger baby quilts.  When they are little babies they can use these for playmats and grow into them.


It was a dreary day when I took the pictures.  The grays ended up looking darker and more blue/gray.


I was working with the number of blocks that I had and wanted to use them all if possible…so I ended up with one quilt in a 5×5 setting and one in a 4×4 setting.

Ask Jo: Quilts, Kits and Shoes

Hello, and welcome to another edition of “Ask Jo”.  I get many comments and questions from all sorts of places, the comment section here, Youtube, email, and from our Facebook group.  Sometimes I think others of you might want to know the answers as well so I answer them here on the blog.   Today I’m taking everything from quilts, to kits, to shoes.

“Good day Jo, I am looking at your first photo of the two red blocks. I really like the choice of fabrics. As I am studying them, I noticed a quilted item just peeking out from underneath them. It is gray with gold and cream fabrics. Any chance you can show this item in a future post? It looks very interesting.

A question regarding the size of a baby quilt. I am making my first baby quilt and I am unsure on size. I find dimensions vary greatly in quilt books and on the internet. What size would you recommend for a 6-month old? Not sure if you already answered this type of question in an Ask Jo post . . . if so please point me to it. Thank you.”

Community Quilts by Cheryl in Dallas and Susie near Dallas 

This community quilt edition shows quilt tops made by Susie in Richardson, Texas.  Susie is a blog reader who lives near Cheryl in Dallas, so she delivered a stack of quilts directly to Cheryl — they met at a local quilt store, of course.  I’m showing here the first two quilts that were completed.

Susie’s first quilt top gets loaded onto the longarm.  This is the “floating” method of quilting, the end of the quilt and batting are not attached to rollers.  But won’t that excess fabric get in the way of the quilter. . . ?

 

No. . .  just kick the excess fabric under the quilting frame.

It looks like Susie got her inspiration for the colors in her top from the border fabric.  The circles show up in so many beautiful colors.  Susie has a good eye for coordinating the colors and patterns.  Don’t you love her color combination?

 

 

This block shows the use of gray polka dots with a teal fabric.  The border fabric is gray (it looks black in this picture.)

 

The inspiration for the quilt pattern came from the quilt top itself.  Many quilters I know let the quilt top tell them how to quilt it.  This digital quilt pattern is “Circle Play” designed by Patricia E. Ritter, and it’s available at Urban Elementz.

Susie’s quilt is 76” x 97,” which is just right for a twin bed.

 

The backing is a peach-colored sheet that came from Cheryl’s stash.  Can you see how she used a variety of bindings to finish the quilt?  Pink, green, blue, and purple remnants from the leftover binding’s basket.
