What I’m Reading: Overkill

I just finished up listening to the audio book Overkill by Linda Castillo.  I’ve LONG been and huge fan of the author so was thrilled to see that there was a new book out.

Overkill by [Castillo, Linda]
Her usual books are part of a series about Kate Burkholder.  This book wasn’t.  I was a little skeptical but thought I needed to have an open mind and see…maybe the author was branching out and starting a new series.

So I started in.  Soon I was a little confused.  This was not the author’s typical story…not the typical writing.  This wasn’t a cop “who dun it” story.  This was a romance and not a very realistic one at that.  To say I was disappointed was an understatement.  I was so frustrated that I jumped quick when I saw there was a new book and burned an Audible credit on it.  UGH.

So what did Amazon have to say….
A sadistic killer pushed Chicago cop Marty Hogan past her limits—and it was all caught on video. She lost her job, her sense of self, her entire world…until an open detective position in small-town Texas gave her a chance at redemption.

But she’s about to learn that the past always catches up…
Police Chief Clay Settlemeyer knows all about mistakes and second chances—he’s still earning his own, so he’s willing to give Marty the opportunity to prove herself. But when her ex-partner is murdered, it looks like Chicago is coming to small-town Texas with a vengeance!

Amazon readers gave the book 3.8 stars.  Most ever review mentioned that it wasn’t up to her usual standards.  I’m starting to think that the book was one of her first books and they’ve tried to revive it.  Don’t make the the mistake I did and jump at the book…it is not a Kate Burkholder book…It is not a mystery….it is not the author’s usual.  I give it 2 stars.  UGH.
