AT LAST: Pineapple Crazy

Yahoo…It happened.  I did it!  I am THRILLED.  Pineapple Crazy is a done quilt!!

In all of my life I never dreamed I’d be able to do a quilt like this.  NEVER.

When I first started this quilt I was all excited.  Then I finished one block and it took 50 minutes per block if I was hustling along….I lost my momentum.  Then I decided that I actually liked paper piecing after I learned a few things along the way.  I made a list of some of the “how to” blog posts I wrote while making the quilt.  I had lots of questions asked about organization, printing paper and the like.  Here they are for anyone who would like to go back and read them.

Wow.  I have blogged about this quilt SO MANY TIMES.  I had to dig to find those posts.

I remember WAY back when I was making Bonnie Hunter’s Crab Apple quilt I was complaining about paper piecing.  Just for reference sake:  That was in 2010 and this was the piece I was paper piecing.  Read about that here.

Crabapple

That tree trunk.  Bahahahaha!!  As the old Virigina Slim Cigerette ad said, “I’ve come a LONG way baby”.  I’m so glad I went on, challenged myself with harder paper piecing and moved past that stage in my life.  Now I actually like to be challenged in my quilting.

The bulk of my blocks were done here on this machine.  It was 2015.  We had just moved to this house.  The sewing room wasn’t finished.  I had this small spot to sew.  I didn’t have my stash easily available.  It was sew on these or nothing.  For two months I worked super hard to try to do 12 blocks a week.  Sometimes I made it plus some….other weeks I didn’t.

I worked hard to finish the machine quilting on the quilt on Sunday night and finished it up over the course of Monday morning, Monday night and then Tuesday morning again.

Then Tuesday night…BINDING!  Yes, I machine bind.

There she is…Oh my!

Hubby came home late from farming Tuesday night.  He knows I’ve been working on this quilt for forever (really only since the book came out in 2012).  I showed him the quilt and he said his usual, “cool”.  Then as I was folding it up he said, “Where are you sending that one off to?” (meaning I was giving it away).  I snapped my head around so fast I almost gave myself whip lash.  Then he busted out laughing and laughing.  He was only teasing me!!  That guy!!

I did all of the block myself except for a six or so that Kayla made.  We were hosting the retreat when Bonnie Hunter came in 2015.  She wanted to try her hand at paper piecing.  She made some from the scrap that were there.  Those scraps were darker.  I debated for a long time…use them, don’t use them?  Most of my other blocks are all brights.

Then I decided to add a little black here and there.

Then it blends in and looks okay.

I did change up the pattern a bit.

The quilt is made up of inner blocks and then has different block at the border.  The pattern suggested this…. …

Blast from the Past: April 2011

I’m doing a little series of posts that feature old blog posts.  I have been going back and looking at them.  It’s been fun.  I started blogging in June of 2009…WOW.  Over ten years.  I’m so glad I’ve kept the blog as a diary of sorts…today I’m telling you about projects I finished in April of 2011.

Kelli was home one Saturday and shared her latest quilt top with me.  It was State Fair designed by Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie’s Quilt Company.

Gracie wasn’t the best model….this photo was about the best of the bunch showing off my quilt finish.

HandMeDownQuilt-gracie  The blocks in this quilt are from Bonnie Hunter’s book Scraps & Shirttails: Reuse, Re-purpose, Recycle! The Art of “Quilting Green”.  I was busy making a blue and red version of the Hand Me Down quilt in the book when I got a baby shower invitation.  I quickly cut out some green and blue men’s shirts and started sewing.  This came together really quickly.  There are 25 blocks and then a 4″ border.

The backing was leftovers from a project Kelli had left here and said I could use if I wanted….

Labor Day Madness is the next quilt I was working on. It is from Pat Speth’s book, Nickel Quilts.  This book has some of my favorite quilts in it.  I’ve made several from the book.  You can find the book HERE.

I was tackling UFO projects and this was UFO #4 at the time.  I’m so glad this eventually got finished.  It’s one of the main quilts that go on my bed.

I was busy making star blocks for my Hand Me Downs quilt from Bonnie Hunter’s Scraps & Shirttails: Reuse, Re-purpose, Recycle! The Art of “Quilting Green”.
StarBlocksI loved making them…This was for the quilt Cactus Patch.

I was tackling my flimsy pile.  I grabbed… …

Blast from the Past: Quilts of December2010

I’m doing a little series of posts that feature old blog posts.  I have been going back and looking at them.  It’s been fun.  I started blogging in June of 2009…WOW.  Over ten years.  I’m so glad I’ve kept the blog as a diary of sorts…today I’m telling you about projects I finished in December of 2010.

I didn’t finish any project in November of 2010, but in December, I finished a lot!!

I had finished my Crab Apple quilt.  The quilt is from Bonnie Hunter’s Leader and Ender book.  You can read more about it HERE.

This quilt was a challenge for me as I:
had to paper piece.
I put the sewing machine needle through my finger sewing the blocks together.
broke the needle threader on my machine making the quilt.
I had a HUGE shredding thread problem when I tried to quilt it.
I had issues with the binding fabric not matching and going on a hunt to find matching binding.

I was busy working on the Quiltville mystery.  That year it was Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll.  It’s likely one of my favorite quilts I’ve ever made.

It was my first time ever to make string blocks.

blocks
At the time, I didn’t love them.  Now, they are a favorite!

I was busy making gift bags with batting scraps and my Accuquilt Go.  You can check out this video to see how I did that.

You really don’t need an Accuquilt to make them…just a way to make cut circles.  A ruler like this will work.  Find it HERE on Amazon.

I was also busy making baby toys with my Accuquilt Go.  Here’s a video to show you how.

I was on a big roll with my Accuquilt Go.  REALLY BIG as I had another video showing how to make a hot pad holder with a larger tumbler die.

Again, you don’t need a cutter to make this.  You could free form a tumbler block or you could use a regular ruler like THIS found on Amazon.

A Blast from the Past: Quilts from November 2010

I’m doing a little series of posts that feature old blog posts.  I have been going back and looking at them.  It’s been fun.  I started blogging in June of 2009…WOW.  Over Ten Years.  I’m so glad I’ve kept the blog as a diary of sorts…today I’m telling you about my quilting from November of 2010.

From going back and reading, it doesn’t look like I completed a lot, but I was sewing…

I made up this little quilt top using Miss Rosie’s Paganini Schnibble pattern.  You can read about that HERE.

My Bubbly quilt returned from the Houston Quilt Market where it was displayed in the Accuquilt booth.  You can find a tutorial to make this quilt HERE.  It was SUCH a fun quilt to make!

Judy at Patchwork Times was hosting a quilt mystery.  I was working on it.  The mystery is still available.  You can find it HERE.
