Ask Jo: Gathering

image_pdfimage_print

Last week I wrote a blog post that explained my confusion and asked for some advice from readers concerning my upcoming medical procedure when I take the Radioactive Iodine treatment for my thyroid cancer.

I got a question from Dorothy, “So why are you asking us who have no knowlege of what you are going through for advise ??? And even if we do know what is happening with you, it may have not been the same with “us”. Please ask your Dr these questions—and as for searcrhing the internet for answers, you’ve got to be kidding–ASK YOUR DR.”

Here’s a little bit about me.  I am a researcher by nature.  I went to college and fluctuated between being a elementary education teacher or being an English teacher.  I took lots of writing classes and did lots of research papers.  Researching just became a way of life for me.  I research everything.  I ask for opinions about everything.  I collect information from everywhere I know to….that’s me.  I strongly believe in doctors but I don’t put them on a pedestal and think they are the only source of information.  I gather…I weigh…I analyze….more than all of that, I question.  It’s me.  I am a gatherer.  It’s who I am.  I come by in naturally.  My mom was a gatherer too.

I have a print that I have been looking for.  It’s this one below.  I feel it’s symbolic of me.  I gather.

I am aware that there are other people who do not do that.  They are not gatherers.  I know they go to the doctor.  The doctor says, “do this”, and they do it, story over, problem over, the end. [Read more...]

What I’m Reading: The Bay at Midnight

I’ve told you lots of times that I’m a Diane Chamberlain fan.  I’ve even told you that eventually I plan to listen or read all of her books.  I’ve listened to all that my online library has and periodically I’ve gotten one of her books as well.  I’ve loved them all.

I was recently gifted a few Audible selections and boy oh boy was I happy when I saw that they had several of her books.  I selected The Bay at Midnight.

The book was typically of all of her books.  The story is told in the present with flashbacks to the past.  It is told through the eyes of several of the characters.  I love this format.  In fact it’s on of my favorite and this author is a master at it.

Here’s what Amazon had to say, “Her family’s cottage on the New Jersey shore was a place of freedom and innocence for Julie Bauer—until her seventeen-year-old sister, Isabel, was murdered.

It’s been more than forty years since that August night, but Julie’s memories of her sister’s death still shape her world. Now someone from her past is raising questions about what really happened that night. About Julie’s own complicity. About a devastating secret her mother kept from them all. About the person who went to prison for Izzy’s murder—and the person who didn’t.

Faced with questions and armed with few answers, Julie must gather the courage to revisit her past and untangle the complex emotions that led to one unspeakable act of violence on the bay at midnight.”

I loved the book.  It ranks high on my list of favorites that she’s written.  Amazon reads give it 4.5 stars…I’d give it 4.8.  I’ll definitely be finding more of her books.  They have never disappointed me!

What I’m Reading: The Girl Who Fell from the Sky

I just finished up the audio book The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow.

I ended up picking this book up as it was a recommendation for those who have read Go Set a Watchman: A Novel.  It looked interesting the title was intriguing so I thought I would give it a try and I am glad I did.  I was actually surprised it wasn’t listed at juvenile fiction because for the most part, it seemed more like that to me as it is a coming of age book and told in first person.  I am guessing it missed that distinction as the story is told by several people including some adults in the story.  The book was a little slow at first.  There’s a mystery around a tragic family event and it takes a little while to understand that.  I would recommend giving the book at least four chapters before quitting.

Here’s what Amazon had to say, “Rachel, the daughter of a Danish mother and a black G.I., becomes the sole survivor of a family tragedy after a fateful morning on their Chicago rooftop.

Forced to move to a new city, with her strict African American grandmother as her guardian, Rachel is thrust for the first time into a mostly black community, where her light brown skin, blue eyes, and beauty bring a constant stream of attention her way. It’s there, as she grows up and tries to swallow her grief, that she comes to understand how the mystery and tragedy of her mother might be connected to her own uncertain identity.

This searing and heart wrenching portrait of a young biracial girl dealing with society’s ideas of race and class is the winner of the Bellwether Prize for best fiction manuscript addressing issues of social justice.”

I did like the book.  I might have picked a different ending as the end does leave it open for a sequel…but it wasn’t bad.  Amazon readers say 3.9 stars.  I’d give it a little more…  4.2.

Try it on Tuesday: It’s Elementary

Last week I told you about the great book with the puppy quilt in it, Story Time: Picture Quilts to Stir a Child’s Imagination by Kim Gaddy.  Well when Kansas City Star sent that book for me to review they also sent another book by Kim Gaddy, It’s Elementary: Schoolhouse-Inspired Quilts for Home and School.  I was so excited to see it!

I’m a teacher at heart so all things school relate, I love!

I have yet to make a house quilt or a school house quilt but this one sure is tempting….

There are more project in the book with a total of 4 quilts and 6 other projects.

I have high hopes of making that pillow….It’s just too tempting to not think about.

You can find the book, It’s Elementary: Schoolhouse-Inspired Quilts for Home and School by following the Amazon link or you can find it here at Kansas City Star.  I think Kim Gabby does a wonderful job at coming up with some fun projects.  You can bet that I’ll be checking out any other books that come out by her..especially if there’s a dog involved!!
